Riprendendo quanto George Edward Moore scrive a proposito del concetto di “bene” (“good”), Hans Kelsen sostiene che il concetto di “dovere” (“Sollen”) sia un concetto semplice, un concetto ultimo, e in quanto tale né definibile, né analizzabile. Questa tesi di Kelsen sembra essere smentita dalle ricerche che sono state condotte parallelamente da Georg Henrik von Wright e Amedeo Giovanni Conte a partire dagli anni '80 del XX secolo. Von Wright e Conte hanno, infatti, distinto dal concetto di “dovere deontico” (“deontic Ought”), il dovere par excellence, altre specie di dovere che essi considerano categorialmente irriducibili al concetto di dovere deontico come il “dovere tecnico” (“technical Ought”) e il “dovere anankastico”. È proprio all'indagine di queste due specie di dovere adeontico che è dedicato il libro Anankastico in deontica.

Mientras que la metafísica, en palabras de Aristóteles, es la «teoría del ser en tanto que ser, estudia las propiedades constitutivas del ser», la deóntica podría definirse como «teoría del deber ser en tanto que debe ser», como teoría que estudia las propiedades constitutivas del deber ser. El término «deóntica» apareció por primera vez con su significado actual, como adjetivo de «lógica», en el artículo de Georg H. von Wright Deontic Logic (1951), en el que el lógico finlandés propuso una nueva lógica, la lógica deóntica, con conceptos deónticos (obligatoriedad, permisión, prohibición) análogos a los conceptos aléticos de la lógica modal (necesidad, posibilidad, imposibilidad). Sustantivado, el término «deóntica» constituye una contribución de Amedeo G. Conte a la filosofía y la semiótica del lenguaje normativo. Como «teoría del deber ser en tanto que deber ser», la deóntica estudia también los sistemas formales de cálculo deóntico, pero no desde un punto de vista estrictamente técnico (como hace la lógica deóntica), sino desde la perspectiva de sus fundamentos teórico-filosóficos.

Los filósofos analíticos que desde Hume guillotinan la realidad afirmando la irrelación entre ser y deber ser, en tanto que gran división que deja al descubierto la falacia naturalista consistente en inferir normas de hechos, no suelen tener presente la complejidad y heterogeneidad del universo normativo, que incita a remarcar una pequeña división, no por ello menos importante, que separa el deber hipotético, técnico, anankástico, del deber categórico, puramente deóntico. El presente libro hace referencia a quienes pareciendo ignorar esta última distinción han reformulado las normas hipotéticas como normas categóricas, así como, inversa-mente a quienes han derivado normas hipotéticas a partir de normas categóricas, cayendo en ambos casos en lo que se podría denominar la falacia anankástica.

Conte, Giuseppe Lorini, Paolo di Lucia, Andrea Rossetti y Carlos Alarcón Cabrera, el presente volumen incluye además la traducción española del ensayo «Imperativer og logik» (Imperativos y lógica), de Jorgen Jorgensen, que fue también objeto de debate en una mesa redonda sobre los «Sesenta años de lógica deóntica». Jorgensen, uno de los fundadores de la lógica deóntica, escribió el ensayo en 1938 en danés y nunca posteriormente fue traducido a otro idioma, posiblemente porque se presuponía que su contenido coincidía con el de «Imperatives and Logic», artículo que, aunque homónimo, del mismo año y del mismo autor, difiere en bastantes puntos del ahora traducido.
