Rather than a centralized state, Iran in the nineteenth century was a delicate balance between tribal groups, urban merchant communities, religious elites, and an autocratic monarchy. While Russia gained an increasingly dominant political role in Iran over the course of this century, Russian influence was often challenged by banditry on the roads, riots in the cities, and the seeming arbitrariness of the Shah. Iran and Russian Imperialism develops a comprehensive picture of Russia’s historical entanglements with one of its most important neighbours in Asia. It recounts how the Russian Empire strived to gain political influence at the Persian court, promote Russian trade, and secure the enormous southern borders of the empire. Using hitherto often neglected documents from archives in Russia and Georgia and reading them against the grain, this book reveals the complex reactions of different groups in Iranian society to Russian imperialism. As it turns out, the Iranians were, in the words of the Russian orientalist Konstantin Smirnov, "ideal anarchists," whose resistance to imperial domination, as well as to centralized state institutions more generally, impacted developments in the region in the century to come. Iran’s troubled relationship with the wider world continues to be a topic of considerable interest to historians, yet little focus has been given to Russia’s historical connections to Iran. After an intensive review of political history involving the relations of Iran with the West and with Russia during the period between the French Revolution and the present, it became apparent to me that at the expense of an always strategically important Iranian nation, these global entities were always shaping their policies so as to benefit themselves at the expense of the welfare of the Iranian people. I felt that there was always something shamefully amiss in the dealings of the Western powers and of Russia with our country (that was derived from a once majestic and imperial Persian empire), and that the outcome of such international diplomacy was invariable injurious and detrimental to the integrity of our rich Motherland. While recording my analysis of certain imbalanced circumstances, I sought for a solution to these inequities. I arrived at an answer that I have chosen to term, "the Iranian Great Revolution", which depends chiefly upon the careful and thoughtful construction of a new constitution by devoted intellectuals - Iranians and multi-nationals - from all over the world. Such individuals would apply their specialized expertise to the creation of a comprehensive document guaranteeing absolute justice and fairness to all subscribers, and it would not allow for any social or religious abuse to take place. Equality in all relationships - domestic and global - is to be the theme of this writ, and its institution will be the elective choice of the Iranian people. A challenge to all Intellectuals to organize and to achieve this constitutional process is my design.

In spite of international award-winning productions, Iran's cinema is underexposed. Because of the prevailing religious, political and social atmosphere in Iran, the country's cinema remained stagnant for more than 50 years. Although the "new" Iranian cinema had begun to develop before the 1979 revolution, the political changes gave rise to a new wave of expression. This volume examines the two waves of modern Iranian cinema: before and after the Islamic Revolution of 1979. The first began about 1969, and the second started in 1984 and carried its momentum through 1997. Topics discussed include the effect of cultural mores on cinematic growth, the development of Iranian cinema as a reaction against commercial cinema and the effect of politics on the film industry.
