The management of soft-tissue neoplasms has always had an aura of mystique due to the relative rarity of these lesions in comparison to the more common cancers occurring in man. There are many variations in technique of the operations employed for these tumors as well. In this volume we have illus trated our own personal preferences in approach to soft tissue sarcomas with the hope it will serve as a useful guide to the surgeon who is faced with one or more of these problems. None of the operations depicted in this manual are original with us but they are procedures and approaches we have found effective for the clinical management of this family of tumors. In presenting this volume we wish to acknowledge our gratitude to our surgical teachers, our present and past associates in surgical oncology, our colleagues in the other oncologic disciplines, and our patients whose treatment is illustrated herein. We are indebted to Dr. Saul Kay, Professor of Pathology, and Dr. James Walsh, Associate Professor of Radiology, for providing the illustrations of histopathology and radiologic imaging in the early chapters. We particularly appreciate the superb artwork of our enthusiastic teammates, Trudy Nicholson and Jane Hurd, as their contribution is the crux of our endeavor. Walter Lawrence Jr., M.D. James P. Surgery Of Spinal Cord Tumors Based On Anatomy written by Chun Kee Chung and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-01-20 with Medical categories.

This book describes and illustrates an approach to surgery for spinal cord tumors that is based on a refined concept of anatomic compartmentalization. The aim of this approach is to enable maximum preservation of spinal cord function through confinement of the surgical work to the involved compartment or compartments. Importantly, this involvement differs according to tumor type, and the classification favored by the author takes this fully into account. After introductory chapters on epidemiology and pathology, the anatomy of the spinal cord relevant to surgery for spinal cord tumors is discussed in detail and the proposed classification is clearly explained. The surgical approach to each of the identified anatomic compartments is then described, with attention to the roles of intraoperative mapping techniques, diffusion tensor imaging, and electrophysiologic studies in ensuring that spinal cord functions are spared. Examples of the author’s experience when applying the proposed approach are presented. The book is meant for neurosurgeons at all levels of experience.

This book presents an Asian perspective on how the treatment of colorectal cancer can be optimized and standardized in ways that take into account technological advances and the trend towards individually tailored therapy. Readers will find careful, well-illustrated descriptions of the standard surgical techniques for rectal cancer and colon cancer that have contributed to recent improvements in 5-year survival rates in the Asia-Pacific region, where the incidence of colorectal cancer has been rising alarmingly due to lifestyle changes. The vital role now being played by minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic options receives detailed scrutiny. Extent and timing of surgery, patient safety, risk of complications, and unresolved issues are all discussed. Furthermore, the use of surgery within the context of multimodal management including chemotherapy and radiotherapy is explained and an integrated approach for stage IV and recurrent disease is described. The book will serve as a valuable reference for young surgeons who are in training, experienced practitioners who want to enhance their knowledge and skills, and all others who wish to learn about this field.

Mohs Micrographic Surgery, an advanced treatment procedure for skin cancer, offers the highest potential for recovery--even if the skin cancer has been previously treated. This procedure is a state-of-the-art treatment in which the physician serves as surgeon, pathologist, and reconstructive surgeon. It relies on the accuracy of a microscope to trace and ensure removal of skin cancer down to its roots. This procedure allows dermatologists trained in Mohs Surgery to see beyond the visible disease and to precisely identify and remove the entire tumor, leaving healthy tissue unharmed. This procedure is most often used in treating two of the most common forms of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. The cure rate for Mohs Micrographic Surgery is the highest of all treatments for skin cancer--up to 99 percent even if other forms of treatment have failed. This procedure, the most exact and precise method of tumor removal, minimizes the chance of regrowth and lessens the potential for scarring or disfigurement

Anterior Skull Base Tumors written by P. Nicolai and has been published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-07-30 with Medical categories.

In recent years, interest in the management of anterior skull base tumors has been fostered by the introduction and subsequent rapid expansion of indications of transnasal endoscopic techniques. In parallel, extraordinary progress has been made in all the other disciplines which are involved in the complex process of managing anterior skull base tumors, leading to substantial improvements in diagnosis and treatment. The anterior skull base can be involved in a large variety of tumors of a varying nature and histology, which in the majority of cases originate from adjacent anatomic sites. In fact, primary lesions of the anterior skull base mainly include osteoma and other tumors originating from bone and cartilage. Tumors involving the anterior skull base have their origin prevalently in the sinonasal tract, but lesions developing on the intracranial site, such as meningiomas, may also extend caudally to encroach upon this area. All these lesions are rare, which means that the pertinent literature does not include prospective studies or treatment guidelines based on a high level of evidence. In view of the extreme histological variability of lesions involving the anterior skull base, much emphasis has been placed on addressing the different nuances of treatment in relation to histology, especially for malignant tumors. The chapters focusing on surgery provide divergent views on selection criteria for a specific surgical technique, which is the aim of this publication.
