Excerpt from Anatomy: Descriptive and Topographical in 625 Illustrations Sixteen years ago, ago, Heitzmann's Anatomischer Atlas" was first published. Since that time the work has been one of the principal works on anatomy in use in German and Austrian universities, and more than 30.000 copies of it have been sold. As the work is now offered to the English reading medical public, it is by no means an exact translation from the German, and, especially in the second part, the text was often materially altered, in order to bring it more in unison with the leading English works, such as Gray and Quain. It will be noticed that a good many Latin words were allowed to remain in the figures, even where such words are not in general use in the English text books; wherever this was done, the corresponding English word was almost invariably added to the text, so that, even for those not well versed in Latin, there would be no difficulty in understanding them. With the exception only of those figures especially so mentioned, the illustrations were all drawn on wood by the author, either from nature, or from preparations in the anatomical museum at Vienna. In its present, slightly altered form, it is hoped that the work will serve both as an aid to the medical student, and as a work of reference to the physician. Excerpt from Applied Surgical Anatomy, Regionally Presented, for the Use of Students and Practitioners of Medicine The study' of Anatomy is relieved of much of its difficulty when it is approached on the practical side. Isolated details do not appeal to the faculty of interest, but when they are set forth in their natural relationship, and their practical application is pointed out, the mind grasps and recollects them with facility. As Anatomy is the most basic of all the medical sciences, a working knowledge of its data is indispensable for the study and practice of scientific medicine and sur gery. The author has endeavored to embody these principles in the present work, and to do it in such a manner as to answer the needs of both students and practitioners. The plan of the work has been developed from twelve years' experience in teaching Anatomy. The author believes the form of presentation he has followed to be the best for didactic lectures, and that descriptive Anatomy is most advantageously learned from text books and in the dissecting room. The regional and topographical method of treating Applied Anatomy is likewise the most convenient for clinical purposes. It is scarcely necessary to state that in order not to exceed the proper limits of a book designed for clinical and didactic purposes a most careful selection had to be made from the vast aggregate of knowledge constituting the modern science of anatomy. If in parts the text may appear quite as much like an anatomical surgery as a surgical anatomy, it is because of the author's belief that this is the best way to Complete the study of anatomy and to begin the study of surgery. Excerpt from Clinical Applied Anatomy: Or the Anatomy of Medicine and Surgery In 1862 there appeared a work which is now classical, "Rest and Pain," by John Hilton. In the preparation of the present volume we have endeavored to follow, in some degree, the lines suggested by that author, and to indicate the important influence of Anatomy on the incidence and progress of disease, disorder, and injury of the human body. We are fully conscious that we have but inadequately fulfilled the task we have imposed upon ourselves. There are many omissions; and explanations are not always so complete or convincing as we could desire. We have aimed throughout at keeping the book within reasonable limits, and have avoided the inclusion of highly controversial points. So many excellent treatises on Applied Anatomy have made their appearance of recent years that it might be thought that there was neither room nor necessity for another. The present work, however, differs from these in that it deals with the purely clinical side of the subject, and is written from a practitioner's rather than an anatomist's point of view. Hence all anatomical points which are not essential are omitted. The anatomy of surgical procedures, which is already amply detailed in various manuals of operative surgery, is purposely passed over. We trust that the book will prove of service to the senior student and to the practitioner, and show that Systematic Anatomy has not yet said its last word in the education of the clinician. Gray's Anatomy, published in the UK in 1858 under the original title Anatomy: Descriptive and Surgical, is a detailed English textbook on human anatomy, focused on teaching medical students human anatomy for practical knowledge during surgery. This unique first edition includes more than 300 pages of illustrations by H.V. Carter, M.D. Each image is labeled with the corresponding bones, muscles, nerves, and organs. In addition, the book is separated into chapters based on the systems of the body for easy use. While Gray's Anatomy may no longer be a suitable study guide for modern physicians, it is considered a classic work on the subject and is a great reference for those interested in the origins of the study of human anatomy. HENRY GRAY (1827-1861) was a renowned British anatomist who studied at St George's Hospital Medical School in London. His focus was on the endocrine glands and spleen until he approached fellow colleague Henry Vandyke Carter to help him write a comprehensive and accessible anatomy textbook. The team worked for more than a year studying unclaimed cadavers to help write the text. It was published in England in 1858 and in America only one year later. Gray published the first two editions before it was acquired by Longman's in 1863, shortly after Gray's early death from smallpox.
