Excerpt from The Ancient Egyptian Doctrine of the Immortality of the Soul In writing this treatise my object has been to give a clear exposition of the most important shape which the doctrine of immortality assumed in Egypt. This particular form of the doctrine was only one of many different ones that were held. The latter, however, were but occasional manifestations, whereas the system here treated of was the popular belief among all classes of the Egyptian people, from early to Coptic times. By far the greater part of the religious papyri and tomb texts and of the inscriptions of funerary stelæ are devoted to it; the symbolism of nearly all the amulets is connected with it; it was bound up with the practice of mummifying the dead; and it centred in the person of Osiris, the most popular of all the gods of Egypt. The Book of the Master of t/ze Secret House is its name." So runs the emphatic declaration contained in the great papyrus, of which we have made such frequent mention; and the whole contents are in harmony with it. For throughout there is scarcely a paragraph the expression of which is not studiously obscure and difficult of interpretation. Yet recondite as are both subject and form, we find in it a clue, in some degree at least, to penetrate the mystical teaching of the Egyptian priesthood, that is to say, the doctrines which they taught not merely as to the-nature of the Creator and his original relation to the creature, but also as to the means whereby the creature is admitted to participate in the mysteries of the Creator. The papyrus in question, which was found in the coffin of a priest named Auf Ankh, is now preserved at Turin. And a facsimile of it was published by Lepsius in A.D. 1842. That distinguished Egyptologist thought good to call it the Book of t/ze Dead; a title which usage has rendered almost too familiar to disturb, but which, in itself, is by no means happy, for it gives the idea of regarding the holy departed as dead, whereas the whole conception of the doctrine was the instruction in Life and Light. A much better description is that given by Champollion, who called it the Funereal Ritual, ' and though Dr. Budge vehemently controverts that title, his objections are urged with. more warmth than force. But neither one term nor the other can, it is clear, compete in authority with that which the papyrus claims for itself, namely, the Book or Scroll of t/ze Master of the Secret House. ' The...

Sir E. A. Wallis Budge (1857-1934) was Keeper of the British Museum’s department of oriental antiquities from 1894 until his retirement in 1924. Carrying out many missions to Egypt in search of ancient objects, Budge was hugely successful in collecting papyri, statues and other artefacts for the trustees of the British Museum: numbering into the thousands and of great cultural and historical significance. Budge published well over 100 monographs, which shaped the development of future scholarship and are still of great academic value today, dealing with subjects such as Egyptian religion, history and literature. First published in 1899 as part of the Egypt and Chaldaea series, Egyptian Religion explores the principal ideas and beliefs held by the ancient Egyptians with regard to the doctrine of the resurrection and the future life.
