Between 1629 and 1727 at least six Dutch ships were marooned or lost sailors on the west coat of Western Australia. What was the fate of those shipwrecked survivors? Did they die in misery soon after being marooned? Or did they intermarry with local Aborigines and leave traces - their ghosts - in an entirely new cultural group? Stimulating and thought provoking And Their Ghosts May Be Heard is a fascinating account of the fortunes of Australia's first white settlers.

The true story of the mad heretic who led history's bloodiest mutiny - 'An adult version of LORD OF THE FLIES that is, moreover, entirely true' Evening Standard When the Dutch East Indiaman Batavia struck an uncharted reef off the new continent of Australia on her maiden voyage in 1629, 332 men, women and children were on board. While some headed off in a lifeboat to seek help, 250 of the survivors ended up on a tiny coral island less than half a mile long. A band of mutineers, whose motives were almost beyond comprehension, then started on a cold-blooded killing spree, leaving fewer than 80 people alive when the rescue boat arrived three months later. BATAVIA'S GRAVEYARD tells this strange story as a gripping narrative structured around three strong principal characters: Francisco Pelsaert, the cultivated but weak-willed captain; Jeronimus Cornelisz, a sinister apothecary with a terrifying personal philosophy influenced by Rosicrucianism who set himself up as the ruler of the island; and Wiebbe Hayes, the only survivor with the courage to fight Jeronimus's band. The background to these events, including the story of the Dutch East India Company, and the discovery of Australia, is richly drawn.

Vertrek is a lively, wide-ranging social biography about fifteen postwar Australian-Dutch families, taking central stage is the Paulusse family. Candidly narrated by Kees Paulusse, the son of Dutch immigrants to Melbourne in the early sixties, this chronicles the familys adventure and his own perceptions and experience. Vertrek begins on November 9, 1961, when his family sails Australia bound on the iconic Dutch colonial liner Johan van Oldenbarnevelt. This fast-paced and intriguing social biography resonates with the indomitable spirits of postwar Dutch immigrants. This vivid chronicle details the lives of fifteen divers Dutch families whom Kees befriended when he became a postman at Portarlington, a fishing village where his dad, Piet Paulusse, and other Dutch families operated scallop fishing boats. Every day, frustrated and homesick, young Dutch women waited in anticipation at their front gate letter box for therapy talks to Kees, de Postbode (Keith, the Postie). This biography is a story full of Joie de vivrethe joy of living; its contagious, uplifting, and even humorous. The easygoing manner of Australians was a great equalizer to our somewhat driven Dutch nature; no worries and a fair go resonated with everything will be all right. The resourceful, tolerant, artistic, and freethinking Paulusses quickly formed friendships with native-born Australians. Aussies resonated with links of Dutch historical strands that made up the Australian identity, begun in 1606, when the Dutch discovered, mapped, and named the worlds fifth continent New Holland. The mythological retired Australian Gallipoli soldiers called Anzacs also wanted to make friends with this young Dutch postie, who talked like the Belgians, whom they met at Ypres and Passchendeale. Arriving in at the Migrant Assimilation Camp, the Paulusses were urged to drop their native language, cultural norms, and values. Culture shocks were relentless for this liberal Protestant Dutch family whose values clashed with a monoculture conservative Angloceltic society that was years behind in attitude and sophistication. Living in a transit Caravan Park, the family came face to face with human rights abuses. Confronted with the White Australia Policy, inequality of women, nonrecognition of Aborigines, the stealing of babies from unmarried mothers, and the stolen generation of Australian aborigines, all were awareness incubators for the familys later involvement in social justice. This biography begins in the effervescent cultural cauldron of the counterculture movements. Not only did the pill change sex from procreation to recreation but completely changed the mores of conservative Australia. Despite the antiwar movements popularity, the Australian government was about to conscript eighteen-year-old Dutch boys to fight in the killing fields of Vietnam. As of old, the Dutch revolted, tens of thousands started a new exodus of Vertrek back to Nederland.

From Terra Nullius to Land of Opportunities and Last Frontier, the European dream has constructed and deconstructed Australia to feed its imagination of new societies. At the same time Australia has over the last two centuries forged and re-invented its own liaisons with Europe arguably to carve out its identity. From the arts to social sciences, to society itself, a complex dynamic has grown between the two continents in ways that invite study and discussion. A transnational research group has begun its collective investigation project of which this first volume is the outcome. The book is a substantial multidisciplinary collection of current research and offers critical perspectives on culture, literature and history around themes at the heart of the Imagined Australia project. The essays instigate reflection, discovery and discussion of how reciprocal imagining between Australia and Europe has articulated itself and ways and dimensions in which a relationship between communities, imagined and not, has unfolded.

The idea of ghosts existing is hard for most people to believe, but there is an accumulation of evidence in that appears to prove otherwise. Until one is actually involved in investigating the subject, an opinion cannot truly be formed one way or the other. The author, who has spent years of studying and investigating the paranormal, has written this book to help those who want to prove that there are ghosts in existence, or even to prove that they do not exist. With years of expertise in the subject, he keeps an open mind when confronted with any potentially paranormal phenomena, and checks everything very carefully before coming to a conclusion. With the help of this book, the paranormal investigator will be able to take steps to discover if there is a ghost haunting a location, who they were in life and why they're haunting that location now, and perhaps provide sufficient evidence to prove the ghost's existence, or that any phenomena experienced have a natural explanation.
