This book is the report of a collaborative effort. Frank Porporino and I arrived at the starting point for our work together by very different routes. Originally trained as an experimental psychologist, I had become in creasingly restive within the confines of the laboratory, and spent a sab batical year in the equivalent of a clinical internship. I then spent some time as a part-time consultant in a local penitentiary. Most of my time in the institution was spent with inmates with a variety of problems, probably about 50 individuals over the course of a year. Although this was far fewer than a full-time psychologist in the system might encounter, it served as a quick cram course on problem prisoners and prisoner problems. Very quickly my stereotypes about convicts were shown to be virtually useless. I learned that the criminal classes included all levels of society, and that the behavior of prisoners was the same as that of other human beings in a difficult environment.

Good clinical practice is impossible without an understanding of the ways in which patients present their complaints. Patients have their own styles of coping and of expressing their concerns, and without a clear understanding of these the clinician may find successful and swift diagnosis and treatment much harder to achieve. Coping and Complaining provides essential guidance for clinicians on how to identify various coping styles, and how to improve the quality of discourse with people of different backgrounds and ages. Drawing on a diverse range of evidence from such areas as developmental psychology, and theories on learning and memory, Coping and Complaining provides essential information on identification of patients' coping styles, focusing on such areas as: · The latest developments in attachment theory · The neurobiology of emotional development, and the biology of language development · Primary processes in early development · Communication, role play, the moral order of the consultation, and emotional first aid · Consequences for preventive medicine Coping and Complaining presents stimulating new approaches to consultations with patients and creative new ways of looking at health promotion.

Drug addiction is no longer - if indeed it ever has been - a problem confined to tower blocks and prisons. With an estimated 250,000 problematic drug users in the UK in every section of society, the UK has the highest levels of addiction and multi-drug consumption and the second-highest rate of drug-related deaths in Europe, according to a report on behalf of the UK Drug Policy Commission. Whether it's a son, husband, daughter or mother, having a problematic drug user in the family is disastrous. Family members have to deal with questions they never dreamed they'd have to answer. Should you continue to allow a drug user to live with you? What should you do if he or she steals from you? What's the best way to encourage him or her to seek treatment? Can you help him or her 'detox' by yourself? What are the health risks to the addict and his family? Why has he or she become addicted in the first place? And, most importantly, what help is available to help your family get through this? This book provides a simple, non-ideological guide for people whose families are affected by drug use. Topics include: defining addiction; types of drugs and what they do; how drug use impacts on the family; your feelings - how to cope; helping the addict; accessing further help - what's available both for families and for addicts.

It all begins with a blank page and a real-life coping problem. What ends up on the page and how much it helps you cope depends on two things: how hard you're willing to work, and how honest you can be with who and what you really are. You will be asked to take a hard look at yourself to see what tools you already have to help you find a way to peace of mind in the midst of an ever changing universe where you must quickly adapt or die. These gifts are simple things like the love of figuring out stuff on your own, a great sense of humor about life, a curious mind. The combination you have is unique to you and the beginnings of putting together your coping tool box. As it turns out, perception is not reality; only reality is reality. Perception is your mind getting fooled by a bunch of facts that seem to add up to more than they really do.
