"André Bazin (1918–58) is credited with almost single-handedly establishing the study of film as an accepted intellectual pursuit, as well as with being the spiritual father of the French New Wave. Among those who came under his tutelage were four who would go on to become the most renowned directors of the postwar French cinema: François Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Jacques Rivette, and Claude Chabrol. Bazin can also be considered the principal instigator of the equally influential auteur theory: the idea that, since film is an art form, the director of a movie must be perceived as the chief creator of its unique cinematic style.André Bazin, the Critic as Thinker: American Cinema from Early Chaplin to the Late 1950s contains, for the first time in English in one volume, much if not all of Bazin’s writings on American cinema: on directors such as Orson Welles, Charles Chaplin, Preston Sturges, Alfred Hitchcock, Howard Hawks, John Huston, Nicholas Ray, Erich von Stroheim, and Elia Kazan; and on films such as High Noon, Citizen Kane, Rear Window, Limelight, Scarface, Niagara, The Red Badge of Courage, Greed, and Sullivan’s Travels.André Bazin, the Critic as Thinker: American Cinema from Early Chaplin to the Late 1950s also features a sizable scholarly apparatus, including a contextual introduction to Bazin’s life and work, a complete bibliography of Bazin’s writings on American cinema, and credits of the films discussed. This volume thus represents a major contribution to the still growing academic discipline of cinema studies, as well as a testament to the continuing influence of one of the world’s pre-eminent critical thinkers."

Andre Bazin On Adaptation written by André Bazin and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-02-22 with Art categories.

"Adaptation was central to André Bazin's lifelong query: What is cinema? Placing films alongside literature let him identify the aesthetic and sociological distinctiveness of each. More importantly, it helped him wage his campaign for a modern conception of cinema, one that owed a great deal to developments in the novel. His critical genius is on full display in this collection, where readers are introduced to the foundational concepts of the relationship between film and literary adaptation as put forth by one of the greatest film and cultural critics of the 20th century. Expertly curated and with an introduction by celebrated film scholar Dudley Andrew, the book begins with a selection of essays that show Bazin's film theory in action, followed by reviews of films adapted from renowned novelists of the day (Conrad, Hemingway, Steinbeck; Colette, Sagan, Duras; and more) as well as classic novels of the 19th century (Bronte, Melville, Tolstoy; Balzac, Hugo, Zola; Stendhal and more). Taken together, this volume will be an indispensable resource for anyone interested in literary adaptation, authorship, classical film theory, French film history, and André Bazin's criticism alike. As a bonus, 250 years of French fiction is put in play as Bazin assesses adaptation after adaptation to determine what is at stake for culture, for literature and especially for cinema"--

The Miracle Of Realism written by Vinzenz Hediger and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-07-15 with categories.

Critic and theorist André Bazin (1918-1958) has long enjoyed canonical status in film studies. As his unpublished and published work has become more accessible to scholars, and as new digital technologies call into question established notions of what cinema is, a new generation of film theorists has delved into Bazin's writings on cinema and technology. However, one critical aspect of Bazin's thinking has received little attention in this recent renaissance: his unorthodox Catholicism. The Miracle of Realism fills in this gap. Exploring the philosophical content and the theological underpinnings of Bazin's contribution to film and media theory, Vinzenz Hediger sheds new light on Bazin's ontological analysis of the photographic image and explores the implications of Bazin's "cosmology of film" for our understanding of contemporary media culture.

Andre Bazin (1918-1958) is credited with almost single-handedly establishing the study of film as an accepted intellectual pursuit, as well as with being the spiritual father of the French New Wave. Among the film critics who came under his tutelage were four who would go on to become the most renowned directors of the postwar French cinema: Truffaut, Godard, Rivette, and Chabrol. Bazin can also be considered the principal instigator of the equally influential auteur theory: the idea that, since film is an art form, the director of a movie must be perceived as the chief creator of its unique cinematic style. Unlike nearly all the other authors of major film theories, Bazin was a working or practical critic who wrote regularly about individual films. He based his criticism on the film actually made rather than on any preconceived aesthetic or sociological principles; and for the first time with him, film theory therefore became not a matter of pronouncement or prescription, but of description, analysis, and deduction. Indeed, Bazin can be regarded as the aesthetic link between film critics and film theorists. During his relatively short writing career, his primary concern was not to answer questions but to raise them, not to establish cinema as an art but to ask, "What is art?" and "What is cinema?" Regrettably, Andre Bazin died tragically young of leukemia in 1958. Yet he left much material behind, all of which is now duly noted and annotated, for the first time, in this book's comprehensive bibliography of writings by Bazin and about Bazin, in all languages. Also featuring a contextual introduction to Bazin's life and work, An Annotated Bibliography of the Writings of the Film Critic Andre Bazin represents a major contribution to the still growing academic discipline of cinema studies, as well as a testament to the continuing influence of one of the world's pre-eminent critical thinkers.

Letters From Hollywood written by Bill Krohn and has been published by State University of New York Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-08-01 with Performing Arts categories.

Journalist and filmmaker Bill Krohn has been the Los Angeles correspondent for the French magazine Cahiers du cinéma for over forty years. Letters from Hollywood brings together thirty-four of his essays, many of them appearing in English for the first time. Focusing most pieces on a particular director and film, Krohn uses his inside knowledge of the studio system to illuminate an art that is also a multibillion-dollar business. He connects currents in French film criticism and theory with an unfolding account of American cinema past and present, offering penetrating insights into directors and their work. Beginning with Allan Dwan, who learned how to make movies before Hollywood was born by watching D. W. Griffith, Krohn presents a panorama that encompasses Alfred Hitchcock and Woody Allen, Stanley Kubrick and Sergio Leone, Star Wars and I Love Lucy. He covers everything from gangsters to gremlins, from blockbusters to no-budget cult films like Moon Over Harlem and Plan 9 from Outer Space, in a style that is accessible to anyone who loves movies, or has a passion for writing about them.
