Excerpt from Andree's Balloon Expedition in Search of the North Pole In the afternoon of Sunday, the 11th of July, 1897, the balloon "Ornen" left the port of Virgo, Spitzbergen, carrying in its car Messrs. Andree, Strindberg and Fraenkel, the bold explorers, starting for the conquest of the North Pole. All the papers of the day were immediately full of discussions in various strains - pessimistic or favourable comments and prognostications, articles full of hope or criticism, each, in short, looking upon this extraordinary expedition from his own point of view. In the 21st century - the age of the budget airline - where quick and reliable air travel is available to a large segment of society, it seems hard to comprehend that it is less than 250 years since the first human took to the skies. Although the wing of the bird seemed like the most obvious natural mechanism to attempt replicate, it was actually contained hot air, as demonstrated by the Montgolfiers and their balloon, that gave birth to the era human aviation. Since the first manned balloon flight in 1783, developments have come thick and fast, the airship, the aeroplane, and finally the space shuttle. This reprint of a classic publication by Henri Lachambre and Alexis Machuron tells the story of S. A. Andree's 1897 attempt to reach the North Pole by hydrogen balloon. Complete with illustrations and a brand new introduction this work is a fascinating read for anyone with an interest in the fantastic and majestic lighter-than-air period of aeronautical history."

In this grand and astonishing tale, Alec Wilkinson brings us the story of S. A. Andrée, the visionary Swedish aeronaut who, in 1897, during the great age of Arctic endeavor, left to discover the North Pole by flying to it in a hydrogen balloon. Called by a British military officer “the most original and remarkable attempt ever made in Arctic exploration,” Andrée’s expedition was followed by nearly the entire world, and it made him an international legend. The Ice Balloon begins in the late nineteenth century, when nations, compelled by vanity, commerce, and science, competed with one another for the greatest discoveries, and newspapers covered every journey. Wilkinson describes how in Andrée several contemporary themes intersected. He was the first modern explorer—the first to depart for the Arctic unencumbered by notions of the Romantic age, and the first to be equipped with the newest technologies. No explorer had ever left with more uncertainty regarding his fate, since none had ever flown over the horizon and into the forbidding region of ice. In addition to portraying the period, The Ice Balloon gives us a brief history of the exploration of the northern polar regions, both myth and fact, including detailed versions of the two record-setting expeditions just prior to Andrée’s—one led by U.S. Army lieutenant Adolphus Greely from Ellesmere Island; the other by Fridtjof Nansen, the Norwegian explorer who initially sought to reach the pole by embedding his ship in the pack ice and drifting toward it with the current. Woven throughout is Andrée’s own history, and how he came by his brave and singular idea. We also get to know Andrée’s family, the woman who loves him, and the two men who accompany him—Nils Strindberg, a cousin of the famous playwright, with a tender love affair of his own, and Knut Fraenkel, a willing and hearty young man. Andrée’s flight and the journey, based on the expedition’s diaries and photographs, dramatically recovered thirty-three years after the balloon came down, along with Wilkinson’s research, provide a book filled with suspense and adventure, a haunting story of high ambition and courage, made tangible with the detail, beauty, and devastating conditions of traveling and dwelling in “the realm of Death,” as one Arctic explorer put it.

Excerpt from Andree at the North Pole: With Details of His Fate The idea of reaching the North Pole in a balloon occurred to Andree in l882 3, while he was spend ing the winter in Spitzbergen as a member of a scientific expedition. This idea grew upon him during years of subsequent toil and study, in the course of which a number of notable aerial voyages gave him the necessary training and experience, especially that of the lgth of October, 1893, when he was carried by a westerly wind across the Baltic to Finland, and that of the 29th of November, 1894, when he was carried three hundred miles across the Baltic from Gothenburg to the Island of Gothland. Not illustrated. 1898 edition. Excerpt: ... IV. THE "VICTORIA"--BEAR HUNTING. Ox the 27th of June, in the afternoon, our attention is attracted by the arrival of a vessel coming from the North. It is always a pleasant event to come across other navigators in these distant regions; it makes one feel less lonely and isolated. It is Mr. Pike's "Victoria," commanded by Captain Wilson, who hunts bears and seals on these shores. She casts anchor near the "Virgo." We enter a boat and go to welcome the travellers. Andree obtains from the captain some information as to the state of the ice in the North. I pay a visit to the boat, which, though otherwise plain and rough, is nevertheless fitted up to perfection for the peculiar nature of her expeditions. She contains various objects which are not without interest for me, who am a newcomer to these extraordinary regions, such as skins of bears and various birds, also a live young bear captured at the Norwegian islands, who utters ominous growls and seems to protest energetically against this outrage upon his liberty. Sunday, the 38th of June, was an eventful day, and full of emotions. The "Victoria" left at 9 A. M. for Ice-Fjord, taking with her an enormous parcel of letters with our best wishes for our nearest and dearest. After an early lunch we started for an excursion. Strindberg, Grumberg, Arrhenius, Dr. Ekelund, two engineers, two sailors and myself went off in the steam launch. The weather was superb, the sea calm, the sky a little misty; some pretty cumuli touched the mountains. We turned round Dane's Island and shaped our course towards Smeerenburg. Our little boat goes ahead full speed and gives herself up to a mad race among floating ice-blocks which cover the surface of the bay. The spectacle is marvellous! We are surrounded by...

ABOUT THE BOOK “Except for the bottom of the sea or the center of the earth, the North Pole, at the end of the nineteenth century, was the world's last mysterious destination.” The Ice Balloon: S.A. Andrée and the Heroic Age of Arctic Exploration retells the attempt by Swedish explorer S.A. Andrée to reach the north pole by hydrogen balloon. Writer Alec Wilkinson recounts the whole story of Andrée’s venture from its first conception to the final recovery of its lost artifacts, and intersperses his tale with other events in the history of Arctic exploration. Wilkinson draws on previous accounts of Arctic exploration as well as original documents from various expeditions to reconstruct an era of scientific discovery. The book includes photographs taken by contemporaries of Andrée, including some that were shot on Andrée’s expedition and lost for decades when the undeveloped film was frozen in the ice along with the members of the party. MEET THE AUTHOR Nicole has been writing since she could make letters with a pencil, and has been making a living at it for more than ten years. She has gone back to school too many times, studying archaeology, folklore, writing and visual art. She writes fiction under several pen names, and also does printmaking, book arts, and photography. Nicole is an avid amateur natural historian with a particular fascination for things that fly, whether it's birds, bats or insects. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK In 1893, a Norwegian named Fridtjof Nansen set off to strand his purpose-built ship, the Fram, in the Arctic ice with the hope it could drift to the north pole along with the ice. There were thirteen men on the crew, who lived in relative comfort compared to other Arctic explorers. Nansen had planned carefully and the Fram was well-insulated and warm. He was not content to simply wait and set off with another crew member to attempt to reach the pole by dogsled. But his haste proved to work against him as they had to turn back. It was not until 1896 that they encountered other explorers, and were able to make their way back to their ship. This was the same time at which Andrée was planning his first attempt to launch his balloon. In the summer of 1896 Andrée and his two crew members, meteorologist Nils Eckholm and photographer Nils Strindberg, along with a large crew of people to help build a temporary balloon shed and prepare for the journey, arrived in Spitsbergen. By the end of the summer the attempt was abandoned due to a lack of favorable winds for the balloon. Buy a copy to keep reading!

This detailed account of the preparations and departure of the epic flight by two members of the expedition support team, Henri Lachambre and Alexis Machuron, captures perfectly the scale, planning and atmosphere of this great adventure. Including a wide variety of photographs, the book is a personal account of the construction of the balloon by Lachambre; it's transportation to Spitzbergen and incarceration in a specially built shed. The trials and tribulations of the initial curtailed expedition in 1896 are followed by those of the more successful second trip which culminated in the eventual departure of the explorers. The technical detail of the balloon is combined with accounts of the teams' day-to-day life at sea and ashore in the arctic whilst awaiting the right weather. Diversions included hunting trips and the setting-off of avalanches for the amusement of the crew. And finally, following the interception of a carrier pigeon some days after launch, comes the last message.
