Forschen Ethnologen alleine für die Wissenschaft? Oder gehört auch die praktische Anwendung der Ergebnisse zu ihrem Aufgabenfeld? Viele Ethnologen stellen sich im Laufe ihrer Arbeit einmal die Frage nach dem konkreten Nutzen der eigenen Forschung. Steht die Verfolgung außerwissenschaftlicher Ziele im Zentrum, wird man fast unausweichlich mit ethischen Dilemmata konfrontiert. Die Reflexion über ihre Ursachen und eine Umsetzung gewonnener Erkenntnisse könnten zu einem Ausweg aus dieser Zwickmühle verhelfen. Am Beispiel einer Feldforschung zu Tourismusplänen in einem Naturpark auf den Philippinen werden in diesem Buch ethische Problemfelder in der angewandten Ethnologie illustriert. Die von der Autorin erfahrenen Spannungsfelder können auf einige Antagonismen zurückgeführt werden, die bereits in den Fachdiskurs eingeschrieben sind. Hierzu zählt etwa die Verantwortung gegenüber der Wissenschaft im Gegensatz zu jener gegenüber der untersuchten Bevölkerung. Die Autorin setzt sich mit den Grenzen eines Kultur- und Werterelativismus auseinander und hinterfragt einige Grundannahmen des Umweltschutzgedankens, der die Grundlage für viele Entwicklungs- und Umweltschutzprojekte darstellt.

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2005 im Fachbereich Ethnologie / Volkskunde, Note: 2, Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: In dieser Hausarbeit möchte ich näher untersuchen, wie sich das Verhältnis der Parallelität von lokalem Wissen und wissenschaftlichem Wissen im Great Himalayan National Park darstellt und was sich daraus für Möglichkeiten für eine Angewandte Ethnologie ergeben. Fragestellungen sind für mich dabei, ob in der Parallelität von Wissen eine Wertung enthalten ist und was sie für den Kontext bedeutet sowie für welche Perspektiven die Angewandte Ethnologie erfolgen kann. Hierzu stelle ich im 1. Arbeitsschritt das Fallbeispiel, den Great Himalayan National Park, vor. In den 2 folgenden Abschnitten gehe ich auf die Parallelität von Wissen und die Angewandte Ethnologie ein und ziehe unter 4. abschließend das Fazit. Gegen die Thematik könnte man einwenden, dass es sich nicht um eine gewissermaßen typische Umweltveränderung und Naturkatastrophe, wie etwa die im Seminar behandelten Themen Dürre, Vulkanausbruch oder Erdbeben, handelt. Allerdings stellt auch der Great Himalayan National Park eine Umweltveränderung dar, weil beispielsweise neue Siedlungen geschaffen werden und Forschung betrieben wird. Vor allem aber wird die Umwelt der lokalen Bevölkerung verändert, die nun unter anderem nicht mehr jagen darf (Baviskar 2000: 110). Die Tatsache, dass in einem Nationalpark im Gegensatz zu einer durch den Menschen möglicherweise begünstigten Dürre die Natur geschützt werden soll, verändert also nicht die Tatsache, dass hier dennoch Umweltveränderungen stattfinden. Es sei hier noch angemerkt, dass ich aus Platzgründen wie Baviskar den Great Himalayan National Park mit GHNP abkürze. Weiterhin werde ich die Begriffe „wildlife“ und „ecodevelopment“ nicht übersetzen, um Bedeutungsverschiebungen zu entgehen.

Organizations are increasingly the subject of moral debates. The positioning of enterprises of various sizes, non-governmental organizations, or public institutions is discussed and taken as a basis for consumer, client, and political decisions in a broad scope of topics. While the perspectives of customers, organizations, and further stakeholders on such developments have been highlighted under the label of 'ethical consumption' or vis-à-vis the fragility of organizations, the impact and effects on actors working in or for such organizations or subcontractors have so far only been dealt with tangentially or left as a blank spot. One Discipline, Four Ways offers the first book-length introduction to the history of each of the four major traditions in anthropology—British, German, French, and American. The result of lectures given by distinguished anthropologists Fredrik Barth, Andre Gingrich, Robert Parkin, and Sydel Silverman to mark the foundation of the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, this volume not only traces the development of each tradition but considers their impact on one another and assesses their future potentials. Moving from E. B. Taylor all the way through the development of modern fieldwork, Barth reveals the repressive tendencies that prevented Britain from developing a variety of anthropological practices until the late 1960s. Gingrich, meanwhile, articulates the development of German anthropology, paying particular attention to the Nazi period, of which surprisingly little analysis has been offered until now. Parkin then assesses the French tradition and, in particular, its separation of theory and ethnographic practice. Finally, Silverman traces the formative influence of Franz Boas, the expansion of the discipline after World War II, and the "fault lines" and promises of contemporary anthropology in the United States.

Worldly Provincialism introduces readers to German anthropology during the age of empire and illustrates how the initial motives and interests that gave birth to German anthropology were channeled and shaped by contexts as various as romantic voyages in the South Pacific, the Herero wars in Southwest Africa, open-air presentations of exotic peoples in Berlin, and prison camps during World War I. It also shows that Germans' unique intellectual traditions, their emphasis on concepts of culture, and the late arrival of both the German nation-state and the German colonial empire affected their interest in and relationships with non-Europeans. Worldly Provincialism confirms that there is no justification for presupposing that Europeans shared a common cultural code while abroad or for assuming that they would have behaved similarly during their interactions with non-Europeans. Thus, we must rethink the relationships among anthropology, colonialism, and race. It also forces a rethinking of our understanding of race in the nineteenth century, when race science emerged and eclipsed many alternative racial theories. H.
