This book accurately chronicles the creation of the French Protectorate of Cambodia through the accounts of the people who actually participated in its inception and in the context of the political intrigues of that time and place involving Cambodia, Siam, France and Great Britain. In the same decade of the 1860's two other related treaties complicated and then resolved the protectorate treaty. Drawing on the same historical context this new book commemorates the 150th anniversary in 2016 of the beginning of photography in Cambodia, presenting over 145 rare engravings, maps, and the remarkable first photographs captured at Angkor and Phnom Penh by John Thomson and Emile Gsell, decades before photographic film was even invented. On February 26, 1866 John Thomson arrived at Angkor Wat to capture the first photographs there. Four months later Emile Gsell's historic photographs at Angkor also marked the beginning of the French expedition, led by Commander Doudart de Lagrée, to explore the then uncharted Mekong River from Cambodia to the north of China, one of the great and most courageous expeditions of exploration in recent centuries. In the end, France captured Cambodia, Siam captured Angkor, King Norodom captured the crown and the throne of Cambodia and for at least a short time the independence of the kingdom, John Thomson and Emile Gsell captured the first photographs at Angkor, and Ernest Doudart de Lagrée was captured by duty, adventure and the affection of a little Cambodian boy named Chhun.

The Khmer Empire was the most powerful in Southeast Asia for 600 years. Ruled by kings called "god-kings," it dominated much of the Mekong and Chao Phraya River basins between 802 and 1431 and built some of the most impressive temples in the world. Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam are all former Khmer territories. For hundreds of years before its collapse in 1431, the Khmer Empire dominated Southeast Asia. With its capital at Angkor, it was the region's largest and most powerful Empire, incorporating parts of Vietnam, Thailand, Burma, and Malaysia into its territory. Historians disagree on the reason for its fall. One theory is that it was a result of an internal power struggle. Another theory is that the Empire's citizens were unhappy with their ruler and demanded another leader, which led to the collapse of Angkor. Another popular theory is that because no central government was in charge, local leaders started fighting with each other over land rights. Some historians also think that foreign invaders might have played a role in ending Khmer influence over Southeast Asia and causing their downfall. They say this because after Angkor was abandoned by its people and left unattended for centuries, several different groups took control over it—including Europeans who colonized Vietnam and Thailand during this period (18th century). To them, this suggests there must've been some conflict between these new rulers of the Khmer Empire." Historians think Angkor had a population between 750,000 and 1 million by the 12th century, making it one of the largest cities ever built. Angkor Wat is also the largest religious building in the world, with a footprint of 400 acres or 162 hectares. It covers an area greater than Manhattan Island in New York City. Angkor Wat was built as a Hindu temple, but it also reflects influences from Buddhism and Jainism. The temple was constructed by King Suryavarman II during his reign from 1113 to 1145. It took about 30 years to build, but today only 15 percent of the original structure remains standing. The architecture at Angkor is unmatched for its scale, complexity, and harmony. Compared to other temple complexes in Asia, the temples of Angkor are the most significant religious buildings in the world.

Since Cambodia's reopening to the world in the past dozen years, following its genocidal civil war, there has been a burgeoning interest in its history, art and architectural relics. In parallel with this growing popular interest has been a renewal of international scholarly work and corresponding publication on the Khmers. The Khmer empire, which at its height covered the whole of present-day Cambodia and most of Thailand, flourished over 500 years. The most famous firsthand account of the Kingdom of Angkor was left by the imperial Chinese envoy Zhou Daguan. But Zhou's was not the only portrait of Angkor and the kingdoms that came before it. The Empire Looks South draws on other sources to provide new and engrossing perspectives on early Cambodia up to and including the time of Angkor. These sources include accounts in official Chinese histories, descriptions by Buddhist monks, reflections of Daoists searching for immortality, and reports by Chinese merchants seeking perfumes and other exotic goods. The first kingdom of Cambodia, Funan, was centered on the lower Mekong. After its mysterious demise in the seventh century, Funan was succeeded by Zhenla, the Chinese name for Cambodia until the time of Zhou Daguan. Peter Harris provides details of the kingdom of Funan. He then describes the royal government and customs of Zhenla, while taking account of Cambodia's likely fragmentation at the time into several polities. The book concludes with accounts of Angkor in its final centuries, including an updated translation of Zhou Daguan's Record.
