A urgência de pensar o animal é a mesma que obriga a refletir criticamente sobre a crença milenar na primazia ontológica do ser humano e em sua superioridade diante das outras espécies, contra as quais ele implementa lancinantes expedientes de exploração, experimentação e consumo que não só têm produzido todo tipo de sofrimento (o que já é terrível e condenável por si só) como têm contribuído para a extinção de muitas formas de vida que povoam ares, terras e águas. Esse primeiro contrassenso, de cunho ontológico, fechou o animal em seu círculo próprio pretensamente intransponível (porque sem mediação linguística) e se desdobrou em um embuste moral que levou o homem a negar a própria animalidade em vista do presumido melhoramento fundado na racionalidade, cujo resultado foi o adoecimento, o enfraquecimento e o fastio do homem consigo mesmo. Não é por outro motivo que a filosofia contemporânea tem se dedicado a rever a condição ontofenomenológica e a relação ética entre animais humanos e não humanos, tendo como fio condutor a própria animalidade que os unifica ontologicamente: em seu sentido mais complexo, esse se tornou um dos temas centrais do pensamento filosófico, especialmente a partir da segunda metade do século passado, cujo empenho tem sido desconstruir as prejudiciais hierarquias no plano geral da vida e repensar o animal humano em sua íntima relação com o inteiro mundo da vida. Em tempos de um anti-humanismo que anunciou o fim do homem, abrindo caminho para muitas quimeras do pós e do transumanismo, pensar o animal pode ser um caminho para a renovação cultural e a afirmação de uma nova atitude dos seres humanos diante de si mesmos e diante do reino extra-humano, por onde vagam as vítimas silenciosas da nossa atual civilização urbano-tecnológica. Por isso, com a questão animal, a filosofia se reaproxima de seus grandes temas, do ponto de vista ontológico, epistemológico, antropológico e ético.

Creo que muchos de los profesionales de la salud, no tienen una comprensión adecuada, acerca de lo que abarca la Medicina del Trabajo y las relaciones que esta tiene con la Epidemiología. Más aún, frecuentemente se encuentra una falta de comunicación entre el médico del trabajo y el epidemiólogo a pesar de su mutuo interés en la salud y la enfermedad de los trabajadores. Además, considero justo decir, que la mayoría de los estudiantes de medicina y de otras ciencias de la salud, consideran a la Medicina del Trabajo y a la Epidemiología, como unidades de aprendizaje aburridas e irrelevantes, las que se estudian únicamente porque se les obliga a ello. Otro punto de vista común, en lo referente a la Epidemiología, es que se le considera altamente matemática y demasiado compleja para entenderla. Con este pensamiento, he intentado escribir un libro de texto conciso, para médicos del trabajo, estudiantes de medicina y otros profesionales de la salud, que pueda explicar los conceptos básicos de la epidemiología de manera clara y sencilla. He tratado de suprimir la brecha existente en la comunicación entre el Médico del Trabajo como clínico y el epidemiólogo, describiendo algunos ejemplos clínicos a través del libro, explicando al Médico del Trabajo, por que es necesario el énfasis epidemiológico sobre el estudio de grupos de trabajadores, mas que de individuos.
