"Next to weapons of mass destruction, BSE or Mad Cow Disease was the Blair government's biggest scare. Mark Purdey's investigation is urgent, required reading." - John Pilger "If Purdey is right, he deserves a Nobel Prize for medicine. Instead he has been shot at, his phone lines have been cut and his house has been burnt down. The Ministry of Agriculture, which for 50 years has enjoyed a dangerously close relationship with the agrochemical industry, has repeatedly sought to discredit him." - George Monbiot Mark Purdey's life changed one day in 1984 when a Ministry of Agriculture inspector told him he must administer a toxic organophosphate pesticide to his dairy herd. Passionately committed to organic farming and convinced of the harmful effects of chemicals in the environment, he refused to comply. "It was as if my whole life became focused", he explained later. Before they had a chance to prosecute, Purdey took the Ministry to court and won his case. These experiences led him to challenge the orthodox line on the origins of Mad Cow Disease and its human counterpart variant CJD. Could the insecticide used in the official programme have precipitated the spread of the disease? Purdey's quest to discover the truth was hampered at every turn by government bureaucracies and self-serving scientific cliques who sought to smear and marginalize him. Dogged by dirty tricks and forced to work alone as something of a scientific sleuth, he struggled to reveal hidden interests and dangerous secrets. His supporters included many members of the public, as well as Prince Charles and the poet Ted Hughes. The latter wrote to him expressing "a million congratulations". Increasingly sceptical of the official narrative, Purdey was certain that toxic environmental factors would provide answers, and so embarked on a self-funded worldwide odyssey to investigate. Animal Pharm follows him on these eco-detective trails to locations as diverse as Iceland, Sardinia, Colorado and Australia. Purdey uncovers contamination from industry, munitions, pesticides, nuclear experiments and natural geology, linking these with the emergence of a range of neurodegenerative diseases. His research is at once compelling and disturbing, helping to create a paradigm shift in our understanding of the relationship of pollutants to disease and health.

Although the United States (U.S.) and the more developed nations of the remainder of the world are blessed with a variety of pharmaceuticals, feed additives, and biological products to treat, prevent, and control animal diseases, there is a healthy desire among persons involved in animal health issues to increase our animal medicine chest. The interest stems from the desire to efficiently produce food that is safe and plentiful and from the desire to have more and better government-approved products available for the prevention and treatment of diseases of dogs, cats, and horses and for an increasing variety of minor animal species. For the animal health industry, increased drug availability means broader markets, increased revenues, and an opportunity to better serve their customers. For the veterinarian, more animal health products means that he or she is better able to treat the usual and the unusual conditions, and to prevent animal disease and suffering. No doubt, we are all winners when new technology and industrial and regulatory initiatives hasten the availability of safe and effective animal health products.

Veterinary pharmaceuticals provide animals with the requisite, complete animal health care. The availability of safe and good quality medicines in the right amounts is needed in achieving optimum animal health care. The economic benefits of animal food products cannot be under-estimated. Veterinary pharmaceuticals are needed to meet the ever-growing demand of animal protein for the human population. However, their routine and unguarded use play significant roles in many public health issues, such as antimicrobial resistance. The practices, knowledge, and awareness needed on the use and application of veterinary pharmaceuticals amongst farmers, animal health professionals, microbiologists, and policy makers remain key in ensuring a safe and healthy food chain for all. In the field of veterinary medicine, canine practice is a challenge to veterinarians. In recent years, newer diagnostic methods and therapeutic protocols have been published on a regular basis. Veterinary Drugs provides comprehensive coverage of commercially available animal pharmaceuticals and pesticides. Over 700 unique veterinary agents are recorded along with their chemical structures and exhaustive listings of product trade names and manufacturers. The drug compounds are organized by therapeutic category, allowing all drugs with a particular function to be reviewed and compared quickly and easily. Each main entry includes the following information: the commonly adopted chemical name, three internationally used identifiers of the compound (CAS, EINECS and Merck), and other synonyms and systematic names. The drug's physical properties and acute toxicity, along with its known biological activity and FDA-labeled applications are summarized. Each entry also includes a detailed listing of the trade names of all animal health products containing the drug along with the product's manufacturer and its NADA (New Animal Drug Application) number. A key feature of Veterinary Drugs is its extensive indexing. Appendixes include a CAS Registry Number index; a European Inventory of Existing Commercial and Chemical Substances (EINECS) number index; an index of NADA numbers; and a master index containing over 9,000 names and synonyms. A detailed directory of addresses, websites and phone numbers for animal drug manufacturers and suppliers provides convenient contact information. This reference will be an invaluable companion for animal and livestock veterinarians, pharmaceutical researchers, government food and drug regulators, food safety and public health specialists and biologists who, starting with a single synonym or trade name for a veterinary agent, will be able to quickly find a thumbnail sketch of essential information.
