This book had its beginnings at an altitude of about 35,000 feet. The Author served for thirty-five years in the ministry, following which he became Director of a charitable foundation with interests in many parts of the world. As such, he spent a lot of time in airplanes. He discovered that writing light poetry was a challenging and enjoyable way to use the time spent in the air. The initial impetus for poems having to do with animals came from a grandchild who wanted a poem about a hippopotamus. When the author discovered that there were not many readily available on demand, he simply wrote one. The poems in this little volume are mostly whimsical, occasionally offering a homey moral for the reader to take or leave as he sees fit.

The world in What Animal is filled with uncontainable data, a rush of experiences tumbling one after the other, experiences whose logic is only that they have happened, or cannot be determined as having happened or not. Images--often spliced together in rapid succession, each with a distinct complex of emotional and associative content--operate in "rhymes" of shape, sound, capacity for motion, texture, and number. Image patterns, sound patterns, syntactical shifts, and physical spaces recur in different forms and combinations, as if, could we only comprehend, the patterns would add up to something of galactic, even infinite, dimension.

This playful collection of poems--peppered with an astounding variety of animal sounds--is meant to be read aloud together. These poems for two or more voices explore the myriad sounds animals make--from a frog's jug-o-rum to a fish's boom! to an elephant's bark. Laced with humor, the poems are a delight to read aloud and cover all major classes of animals: mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, insects, even a crustacean! Readers will learn how to estimate the temperature by counting a cricket's chirps and see how creatures make sounds at specific pitches and frequencies, so that they can be heard despite other noise around them. Extensive end notes provide more information on the animals and how and why they make the sounds they do. Written by noted children's poet Georgia Heard, this is an ideal collection for parents and children to share, or for a fun, interactive classroom read-aloud.
