In 1974, the brutal murder of Anita Fagiani Andrews, a fifty-one-year-old former beauty queen and mother of two, shook the small working-class town of Napa. Detectives, criminalists and forensic experts raced to identify who'd struck Anita down in her own bar, but despite their efforts, the case went cold. Decades passed, during which the town grew into a world-renowned wine region and tourist destination, but the case remained an open question. After thirty-seven years, thanks to DNA evidence, the killer--imprisoned for a different murder--was finally found and brought to justice. Join author and retired judge Raymond A. Guadagni as he tells the story of the shocking murder, the investigation and the subsequent trial over which he presided in 2011.

Popular Indian Cinema is clearly a worldwide phenomenon. But what often gets overlooked in this celebration is this cinema’s intricate relationship with global dynamics since its very inception in the 1890s. With contributions from a range of international scholars, this volume analyses the transnational networks of India’s popular cinema in terms of its production, narratives and reception. The first section of the book,Topographies, concentrates on the globalised audio-visual economies within which the technologies and aesthetics of India’s commercial cinema developed. Essays here focus on the iconic roles of actors like Devika Rani and Fearless Nadia, film-makers such as D G Phalke and Baburao Painter, the film Sant Tukaram, and aspects of early cinematography. The second section, Trans-Actions, argues that the ‘national fantasy’ of Indian commercial cinema is an unstable construction. Essays here concentrate on the conversations between Indian action movies of the 1970s and other genres of action and martial arts films; the features of post-liberalisation Indian films designed to meet the needs of an ‘imagined’ global audience in the 1990s; and the changing metaphor of ‘the vamp’ as portrayed through desirous women in films with examples of the Anglo-Asian, the westernized Indian woman of ‘low character’, and the contemporary figure of the ‘heroine’. The final section, Travels, focuses on the overseas reception of Indian cinema with ethnographic case studies from Germany, Guyana, the USA, South Africa, Nigeria and Britain. The contributors highlight various issues concerning modernity, racial/ethnic identity, the gaze of the ‘mainstream Other’, gender, hybridity, moral universes, and the articulation of desire and disdain.

Giacomo Puccini written by Roger Flury and has been published by Scarecrow Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-06-21 with Music categories.

Opera recordings have been with us since the creation of the first wax cylinders. Now at a time when the 25-year reign of the compact disc appears to be coming to an end is the moment to take stock of the history of recordings of arguably the most popular composer of operas, Giacomo Puccini. In Giacomo Puccini: A Discography, librarian and music historian Roger Flury looks at each opera chronologically from Le Villi to Turandot, followed by sections on Puccini's instrumental, chamber, orchestral, and solo vocal works. Details of each complete opera are listed by recording date, followed by excerpts in the order in which they occur in the opera. Recordings of each aria are listed alphabetically by the name of the artist. For ease of use, Flury establishes as the main criteria for inclusion those recordings assigned a commercial issue number and available for purchase. This book does not limit itself to mainstream recordings but includes as well 'unofficial' recordings taken from broadcasts or illegally recorded in theaters, ensuring that the audio recording history of Puccini is free of gaps. (Video and DVD issues, whether of staged performances or excerpts in concert, are not included unless they have been issued in a sound-only format.) This volume brings together information on nearly 10,000 recordings of Puccini's music. It provides a comprehensive overview of the recorded history of the composer's works and serves as a useful guide for the transfer of recordings from one format to another.

This study of New German cinema identifies different styles of historical remembrance in which music participates. It concentrates on how listeners are urged to interact with difference - including Germany's difficult past - rather than try to 'master' or 'get past' it.
