The book series "Diplomatica" of the Don Juan Archiv Wien researches cultural aspects of diplomacy and diplomatic history up to the nineteenth century. This second volume of the series features the proceedings of the Don Juan Archiv's symposium organized in March 2016 in cooperation with the University of Vienna and Stvdivm fÆsvlancm to discuss the topic of gender from a diplomatic-historical perspective, addressing questions of where women and men were positioned in the diplomacy of the early modern world. Gender might not always be the first topic that comes to mind when discussing international relations, but it has a considerable bearing on diplomatic issues. Scholars have not left this field of research unexplored, with a widening corpus of texts discussing modern diplomacy and gender. Women appear regularly in diplomatic contexts. As for the early modern world, ambassadorial positions were monopolized by men, yet women could and did perform diplomatic roles, both officially and unofficially. This is where the main focus of this volume lies. It features sixteen contributions in the following four "acts": Women as Diplomatic Actors, The Diplomacy of Queens, The Birth of the Ambassadress, and Stages for Male Diplomacy. Rundfunkgeschichte gehört seit Längerem zu den zeitgeschichtlichen Forschungsfeldern, hat sich als musikhistorisches Thema aber erst in jüngerer Zeit etabliert. Dieser Band der Anklaenge ist dem zuvor kaum behandelten Thema sowjetischer Präsenz in Gestalt der Radiosendereihe Die Russische Stunde gewidmet. Die von der RAVAG auf Radio Wien seit 1945 ausgestrahlte Sendereihe behandelte Themen aus Musik, Literatur und Wissenschaft, zunächst insbesondere im Zusammenhang mit der Sowjetunion, mit dem ausdrücklichen Ziel, das vom NS-Regime propagandistisch verzerrte Bild des Landes zu korrigieren. In zunehmendem Maße entwickelte sich die Sendung zum Agitationsinstrument der KPÖ. Nach Abschluss des Staatsvertrages 1955 wurde die Sendung eingestellt. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes analysieren die Rolle des inländischen Rundfunks im von der sowjetischen Besatzungsmacht dominierten Teil Österreichs. Die Publikation ist zudem ein Ausweis der am Institut für Musikwissenschaft und Interpretationsforschung traditionell betriebenen musikalischen Zeitgeschichte. Sie kann auch als wesentliche Ergänzung der in anderen Disziplinen angesiedelten historischen Forschung verstanden werden.

Begriffe wie Sicherheit, Freiheit, Risiko waren den Diskursen im Kontext Neuer Musik von Anfang an inhärent. Eine Sicherheitszone in Richtung Freiheit zu verlassen, verlangt ein gewisses Risiko, das wiederum zu Verunsicherungen und Forderungen nach erhöhter Sicherheit führen kann. Das Spannungsfeld zwischen kompositorischer Freiheit und einem Ordnungsbedürfnis des musikalischen Materials, zwischen Kontrolle und radikalem Kontrollverzicht hat die Geschichte der Neuen Musik in sich stets wandelnden Konstellationen bis heute geprägt. Dazu kommen Fragestellungen, etwa ob Kunst heute, so wie die Avantgarden des 20. Jahrhunderts, überhaupt noch verunsichern kann, oder ob das gestiegene Sicherheitsbedürfnis auf politischer Ebene in letzter Zeit sich auf der Ebene der Kunst widerspiegelt. Dieser Thematik bzw. Fragestellungen dieser Art gehen in diesem Band wissenschaftliche wie auch künstlerische Beiträge nach.

This book assembles texts by renowned academics and theatre artists who were professionally active during the wars in former Yugoslavia. It examines examples of how various forms of theatre and performance reacted to the conflicts in Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia, and Kosovo while they were ongoing. This is a groundbreaking study of the prestigious Berlin and Vienna Philharmonics during the Third Reich. Making extensive use of archival material, including some discussed here for the first time, Fritz Trümpi offers new insight into the orchestras’ place in the larger political constellation. Trümpi looks first at the decades preceding National Socialist rule, when the competing orchestras, whose rivalry mirrored a larger rivalry between Berlin and Vienna, were called on to represent “superior” Austro-German music and were integrated into the administrative and social structures of their respective cities—becoming vulnerable to political manipulation in the process. He then turns to the Nazi period, when the orchestras came to play a major role in cultural policies. As he shows, the philharmonics, in their own unique ways, strengthened National Socialist dominance through their showcasing of Germanic culture in the mass media, performances for troops and the general public, and fictional representations in literature and film. Accompanying these propaganda efforts was an increasing politicization of the orchestras, which ranged from the dismissal of Jewish members to the programming of ideologically appropriate repertory—all in the name of racial and cultural purity. Richly documented and refreshingly nuanced, The Political Orchestra is a bold exploration of the ties between music and politics under fascism.
