Das liegt an unserem Gehirn und seinen sich verändernden Vernetzungen. Erinnerungen wiederholen sich, im Laufe des Lebens kommen neue Erkenntnisse hinzu, manches wird nun verstanden, manches wird vertieft, verdichtet sich. Die Teile dieses Bandes sind im Zeitraum von 30 Jahren entstanden. Erzähltes wiederholt sich in anderer oder ähnlicher Form, das entspricht der Natur des Erinnerns, das in Wellen verläuft. Ich habe es so belassen, wenn es mir im Gesamtkontext des jeweils Erzählten notwendig erschien. Es entspricht einem Kreisen um einen Kern, um eine Nabe, für uns wesentliche Momente. Es ist auch ein Versuch, diesem Kern möglichst nahe zu kommen. In den mehr fiktiven Teilen sind Wiederholungen gewollte Stilmittel der Verdichtung. Wir alle leben in einer von der Geschichte, den Zeitumständen gestalteten Zeit, und können nur mit ihr zusammen verstanden werden. Das Kind nimmt die Welt, so wie es sich ihm darbietet. Erst mit der Pubertät reflektieren wir das uns bis dahin Selbstverständliche, unterwerfen es unserer erweiterten Perspektive. Das kann zu Konflikten führen, die uns vielleicht lange, vielleicht unser Leben lang beschäftigen. Wir können aber nicht umhin, auch die älteren Generationen aus ihrer Zeit heraus, aus ihren Lebensbedingungen heraus zu betrachten. Verstehen und verstanden werden gehören für mich zum Wesentlichen . Empathie gilt es einzuüben.

Germany has long entertained the notion that the transatlantic slave trade and New World slavery involved only other European players. Countering this premise, this collection re-charts various routes of German participation in, profiteering from, and resistance to transatlantic slavery and its cultural, political, and intellectual reverberations. Exploring how German financiers, missionaries, and immigrant writers made profit from, morally responded to, and fictionalized their encounters with New World slavery, the contributors demonstrate that these various German entanglements with New World slavery revise preconceived ideas that erase German involvements from the history of slavery and the Black Atlantic. Moreover, the collection brings together these German perspectives on slavery with an investigation of German colonial endeavors in Africa, thereby seeking to interrogate historical processes (or fantasies) of empire-building, colonialism, and slavery which, according to public memory, seem to have taken place in isolation from each other. The collection demonstrates that they should be regarded as part and parcel of a narrative that ingrained colonialism and slavery in the German cultural memory and identity to a much larger extent than has been illustrated and admitted so far in general discourses in contemporary Germany. This book was originally published as a special issue of Atlantic Studies.

This volume presents for the first time a study of the interface between exile and travel within the context of exile from Nazi Germany.
