The Atlantic Connection written by Anna Suranyi and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-05-15 with History categories.

Focusing on the interconnections of the Atlantic world from 1450-1900, The Atlantic Connection examines the major themes of Atlantic history. During this period, ships, goods, diseases, human beings and ideas flowed across the ocean, tying together the Atlantic basin in a complex web of relationships. Divided into five main thematic sections while maintaining a broadly chronological structure, this book considers key cultural themes such as gender, social developments, the economy, and ideologies as well as: - the role of the Atlantic in ensuring European dominance - the creation of a set of societies with new cultural norms and philosophical ideals that continued to evolve and to transform not only the Atlantic, but the rest of the world - the contestation over rights and justice that emerged from the Atlantic world which continues to exist as a significant issue today. The Atlantic Connection is shaped by its exploration of a key question: how did Europe come to dominate the Atlantic if not through its technological prowess? Adeptly weaving a multitude of events into a larger analytical narrative, this book provides a fascinating insight into this complex region and will be essential reading for students of Atlantic history.

Known for his rousing speeches and military triumphs, General George S. Patton, Jr. is one of the most famous military figures in U.S. history. Yet, he is better known for his profanity than his prayers. Until now. In his new book George S. Patton: Blood, Guts, and Prayer, author Michael Keane takes readers on a journey through Patton’s career in three parts: his military prowess, his inspirational bravery, and his faith. Using Patton’s own diaries, speeches, and personal papers, Keane examines the general’s actions and personality to shed light on his unique and paradoxical persona. From his miraculous near-death experience to his famous prayer for fair weather, Patton: Blood, Guts, and Prayer recounts the seminal events that contributed to Patton’s personal and religious beliefs. Comprehensive and inspiring, Patton: Blood, Guts, and Prayer is an extraordinary look at the public and private life of one of World War II's most storied generals.

Sensitive Creatures written by Mandy Ord and has been published by Allen & Unwin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-08-01 with Comics & Graphic Novels categories.

Wonderfully off-beat, Mandy Ord's stories reveal with poetic power the intimate, mundane and extraordinary moments in everyday urban life. From spammers who take over your email identity, to dealing with a dead rat, to putting out flames in a train station bin, to how to warm your feet in winter, the experiences and reflections of Mandy's one-eyed girl will put you in touch with what really matters. 'The small crises of daily life, the ink-cluttered streets, the pockets of joy and ugliness, and one big eyeball taking it all in. Just like the city she describes, Ord's lines converge with a strange and nervous beauty that criss crosses into itself. Honest, perceptive and captivating.' Shaun Tan 'Mandy Ord's stories revel in both the grotesquerie and the wonder of life - often simultaneously. Domestic warfare, dogs, extravagantly bearded men and bread rolls that resemble an arse are addressed with humour, tenderness and lots of wonderful, chunky black ink. Mandy's hugely likeable one-eyed narrator invites us to share her curiosity about her fellow humans, and to come away with our own sensitivities just a little bit closer to the surface.' Nicki Greenberg 'In Mandy Ord's comics you witness an artist using words and pictures as a mode of thinking.' Bernard Caleo

Killing The Poormaster written by Holly Metz and has been published by Chicago Review Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-10-01 with True Crime categories.

On February 25, 1938, in the early days of the welfare system, the reviled poormaster Harry Barck—wielding power over who would receive public aid—died from a paper spike thrust into his heart. Barck was murdered, the prosecution would assert, by an unemployed mason named Joe Scutellaro. In denying Scutellaro money, Barck had suggested the man's wife prostitute herself on the streets rather than ask the city of Hoboken, New Jersey, for aid. The men scuffled. Scutellaro insisted that Barck fell on his spike; the police claimed he grabbed the spike and stabbed Barck. News of the poormaster's death brought national attention to the plight of ten million unemployed living in desperate circumstances. A team led by celebrated attorney Samuel Leibowitz of &“Scottsboro Boys&” fame worked to save Scutellaro from the electric chair, arguing that the jobless man's struggle with the poormaster was a symbol of larger social ills. The trial became an indictment &“of a system which expects a man to live, in this great democracy, under such shameful circumstances.&” We live in a time where the issues examined in Killing the Poormaster—massive unemployment, endemic poverty, and the inadequacy of public assistance—remain vital. With its insight into our social contract, Killing the Poormaster reads like today's news.

The Underside Of Joy written by Sere Prince Halverson and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-01-12 with Fiction categories.

Set against the backdrop of Redwood forests and shimmering vineyards, Seré Prince Halverson's compelling debut tells the story of two women, bound by an unspeakable loss, who each claims to be the mother of the same two children. To Ella Beene, happiness means living in the northern California river town of Elbow with her husband, Joe, and his two young children. Yet one summer day Joe breaks his own rule-never turn your back on the ocean-and a sleeper wave strikes him down, drowning not only the man but his many secrets. For three years, Ella has been the only mother the kids have known and has believed that their biological mother, Paige, abandoned them. But when Paige shows up at the funeral, intent on reclaiming the children, Ella soon realizes there may be more to Paige and Joe's story. "Ella's the best thing that's happened to this family," say her close-knit Italian-American in-laws, for generations the proprietors of a local market. But their devotion quickly falters when the custody fight between mother and stepmother urgently and powerfully collides with Ella's quest for truth. The Underside of Joy is not a fairy-tale version of stepmotherhood pitting good Ella against evil Paige, but an exploration of the complex relationship of two mothers. Their conflict uncovers a map of scars-both physical and emotional-to the families' deeply buried tragedies, including Italian internment camps during World War II and postpartum psychosis. Weaving a rich fictional tapestry abundantly alive with the glorious natural beauty of the novel's setting, Halverson is a captivating guide through the flora and fauna of human emotion-grief and anger, shame and forgiveness, happiness and its shadow complement . . . the underside of joy.
