Lyn Stafford writes her memoir about her time in the 1980s, when she leaves a low-paying job in Alabama to sign a two-year contract in Saudi Arabia. There, she will help launch a new medical journal for the King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Riyadh to be named The Annals of Saudi Medicine. She knows that her decision will cost her. Even though her family's future is the reason for her going to the Middle East, her life in the Kingdom is fraught with risks she never planned for, and the unintended consequences of taking those risks. It seems her fears of not being able to be mother to her three children and daughter to her parents from so many thousands of miles away may all be coming true. But the immediate problems arrive on her doorstep because she has arrived at a moment in history, the third Saudi Arabian Five-Year Plan, when all expatriates and their jobs are at risk. She soon finds out how vulnerable she and all her friends in that hospital are to corruption, surveillance, and even violence by the Hospital's Security Forces. With the help of letters from home and especially from the expatriate underground, which consisted mostly of ham radio operators and returning expats smuggling in news, she begins to see how what she cannot see is affecting everything she can. This curious narrative is about the remarkable, sometimes foolhardy, men and women who navigate an exotic but treacherous landscape. Lyn's carefully researched memoir explores the lives of expatriates in a crazy, politically mixed-up, often dangerous, but beautiful world that seems to have lost its compass.

To even begin to understand what is happening and minimize the damage, she and expats around her turn to each other for help, and they must rely on the ham radios and smuggled-in newspapers of the expatriate underground to figure out what is really happening.

Noncommunicable Diseases In Saudi Arabia written by Ada Alqunaibet and has been published by World Bank Publications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-12-06 with Medical categories.

Saudi Arabia is at an early stage of its demographic transition to an older population, and so it has an opportunity to prepare early for a rising noncommunicable disease (NCD) epidemic. NCDs, such as cancers, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and chronic respiratory diseases and their associated behavioral risk factors—tobacco use, unhealthy diet, and physical inactivity—are an increasing economic and public health challenge. An aging population is expected to significantly increase the prevalence of NCDs and the related demand for costlier health care services. Interventions and reforms to prevent NCDs, and to minimize current and future treatment costs, are needed now, particularly if Saudi Arabia is to achieve the Vision 2030 goal of increasing life expectancy from 75 years in 2021 to 80 years in 2030. To support strategic planning efforts, Noncommunicable Diseases in Saudi Arabia: Toward Effective Interventions for Prevention assesses the latest evidence on the prevalence and risk factors; explores the health and economic burden of NCDs, as well as their impact on human capital; and identifies key gaps in prevention efforts and ways to address these gaps. The book discusses the need for a national master plan for NCD prevention—one that is selective and targeted, with a particular focus on improving the implementation of cost-effective interventions and achieving results. To be successful, the national master plan will need to take into account the roles of the different stakeholders and their likely responsibilities in implementation. The book will be of interest to all those who work on NCDs in Saudi Arabia and beyond.

Rhazes, a great clinician, ranks with Hippocrates, Aretaeus, and Sydenham as one of the original portrayers of disease. His description of small-pox and measles is the first authentic account in literature. This edition contains a list of all the editions and translations, the Greek translator's preface, Channing's Latin preface, Haller's preface, and an index in both Arabic and English. -- H.W. Orr.
