Excerpt from Annals of the Anatomical and Surgical Society, 1882, Vol. 5 Ginglymus. In other words, the ankle is a hinge-joint, and the great. Accuracy with which the bones are adapted to each other, is one great element of its strength. It is formed by the junction of the distal ends of the tibia and fibula, with the upper and two lateral surfaces of the as tragalus. The fibula forms only a minor part of the joint articulating only with the outer side of the astragalus, and its distal end forms the outer malleolus. The tibia, on the contrary, presents a large articulating surface, and its promi inent process forms the internal malleolus. These two bones then form a sort of archway, irregular in shape. They are bound together by ligaments, and this union is so strong that, as is well-known, a fracture of the bones themselves is much more frequent than a laceration of the ligaments, which hold them in position. Into this irregular arch, formed by the two malleoli, the astragalus fits with a degree of accuracy which is surprising. And when the foot is placed upon the ground in walking, the astragalus presents a surface over which the tibia and fibula glide, and each astragalus, in turn, bears the entire weight of the body. In conditions where these apposed surfaces are inflamed, this gliding motion is interfered with, and the structure of the tarsal bones and tarsal ligaments does not permit any vicarious action. Indeed, the limp of ankle-joint disease is characteristic, so also is the limp of knee-joint disease, and the hip limp is easily recognized. An expert in ortho pady can almost always make a pretty accurate estimate of the location of the lesion before his patient is undressed by the peculiarities of attitude, gait, etc., and these remarks are especially true of certain forms of ankle-joint disease. Human brain imaging, connectomics, network analysis, and neuroinformatics are just some of the important current arenas in neuroscience addressed here. The book solves a fundamental problem by supplying the first global, historically documented, hierarchically organized human nervous system parts list. This defined vocabulary accurately and systematically describes every human nervous system structural feature that can be observed with current imaging methods, and provides an extendible framework for describing accurately the nervous system in all animals including invertebrates and vertebrates alike. Research for the book began in the late 1990s when the lack of a systematic vocabulary for neuroanatomy became a critical problem in developing databases and online knowledge management systems for the NIH Human Brain Project (1995-2005), which grew out of the Institute of Medicine's Committee on a National Neural Circuitry Database (1989). One outcome of this research was the publication with Mihail Bota in 2011 of a Foundational Model of Connectivity. It provides the conceptual framework for this book, which is divided into three main parts. The first consists of four chapters discussing the rationale behind the Lexicon of nervous system parts, historical trends in the evolution of neuroanatomical concepts and nomenclature, the development of hierarchical nomenclature tables, and practical notes on using the Lexicon. The second part is the Lexicon itself, with separate entries for 1,381 standard terms. Each standard term has a textual definition including the method used for identification, age, sex, and species to which it applies, and a citation to the first use of the term as so defined. Each entry also has, where appropriate, chronological lists of nonstandard terms (10,928 in all): translations, alternate spellings, earlier delineations before naming, earlier synonyms, later synonyms, and partly corresponding terms. The third part is a set of 10 hierarchical nomenclature tables of nervous system standard terms.

Experimental surgery is an important link for the development in clinical surgery, research and teaching. Experimental surgery was part of the most important surgical discoveries in the past century. Since 1901 nine Nobel Prizes have been awarded to the pioneers had remarkable achievements in the basic or practical surgery. In recent 20 years, experimental surgery has achieved new advances, like laparoscopic and robotic surgery, tissue engineering, and gene therapy which are widely applied in clinic surgery. The present book covers wide experimental surgery in preclinical research models subdivided in two volumes. Volume I introduces surgical basic notions, techniques, and different surgical models involved in basic experimental surgery and review the biomechanical models, ischemia/reperfusion injury models, repair and regeneration models, and organ and tissue transplantation models, respectively. Volume II introduces several specific experimental models such as laparoscopic and bariatric experimental surgical models. The second volume also introduces graft-versus-host disease, and other experimental models. Review the advances and development of recent techniques such as tissue engineering, organ preservation, wound healing and scarring, gene therapy and robotic surgery. The book documents the enormous volume of knowledge we have acquired in the field of experimental surgery. In this book, we have invited experts from the United States, Canada, France, Germany, China, Japan, Korea, UK, Sweden, Netherland, Hungary and Turkey to contribute 36 chapters in the fields of their expertise. These two volumes are the compilation of basic experimental surgery and updated advances of new development in this field that will be invaluable to surgeons, residents, graduate students, surgical researchers, physicians, immunologists, veterinarians and nurses in surgery.
