Dans les moments de gaieté folle, il allait jusqu'à décocher des épigrammes malignes à Robespierre et même à Cambacérès. Il faut vous dire tout de suite où cela se passait, car j'ai l'air de tomber des nues. Nous habitions l'hôtel de Kervigné, sur la place des Lices, à Vannes, chef-lieu du Morbihan. Kervigné est le nom de notre famille, qui a donné à la France deux amiraux et un lieutenant général. Nous figurons à la salle des Croisades de Versailles. Mon père paya pour cela une note de cinquante-sept francs à la maison Godet-Regard de Plantecoq, à Paris, laquelle rhabille les généalogies, ravaude les écussons et va en ville. J'ai gardé un peu de rancune à ma noblesse, qui m'a joué d'assez méchants tours; mais cela ne nous empêche, nous, les Kervigné de Vannes, d'être la branche aînée et comtes depuis Louis XIV. Saint-Simon parle de nous. Les Kervigné de Pontivy ne valent pas l'épluchage. Nous ne cousinons pas. Ma mère était Kerfily, une excellente famille de robe. La fortune venait de son côté, quoique mon père fût loin d'être pauvre. Dieu merci, outre l'hôtel de la place des Lices et le château qui est au bord de la mer, là-bas vers Carnac, nous avons toujours joui d'une trentaine de bonnes mille livres de rente. Mais mon frère le vicomte coûtait cher. Il était, s'il vous plaît, à vingt-quatre ans, chef d'escadron de cuirassiers. Il faut soutenir cela. On avait fait, en outre, une belle dot à ma sœur la marquise. Ma mère parlait quelquefois d'économie. Le lecteur me pardonnera de m'arrêter un instant devant le portrait de ce souriant et charmant vieillard qui était mon père. Il avait assurément tout l'esprit qu'on prêtait à mon oncle Bélébon. Il faisait des petits vers: j'en ai tout un recueil; il savait des quantités d'anecdotes et parlait des affaires du temps avec un bon sens parfait, quoiqu'il fût abonné de fondation au Journal des villes et Campagnes. Il était dévot mais voltairien; je n'ai jamais vu qu'à lui ce mélange du mysticisme breton et des gaietés gauloises. L'oncle Bélébon, les tantes Kerfily et l'aumônier des Incurables se réunissaient parfois pour l'éteindre, mais il lui arrivait de les mener tambour battant quand on avait de bonnes nouvelles du vicomte ou qu'on mettait en perce un tonneau de Saint-Emilion.
