Mit der Komposition extrem kurzer Stücke für größere Besetzungen erscheint in den Jahren um 1910 ein bis dahin unbekanntes Phänomen in der Musikgeschichte. Doch Kürze ist nicht gleich Kürze. Sie kann einer klaren Fasslichkeit ebenso dienen, wie sie sich hermetisch dem Hörer entzieht, als Mangel ebenso abgelehnt, wie als ästhetisches Ideal befürwortet werden. Das Ausloten solcher Wechselverhältnisse macht nicht nur auf einen wichtigen Aspekt der Moderne aufmerksam. Vermittelt werden zudem jene Irritation und Faszination, die musikalische Kürze um 1910 kennzeichneten und die sie bis heute auszustrahlen vermag.
