In this Special Issue of Sensors, seven peer-reviewed manuscripts appear on the topic of ultrasonic transducer design and operation in harsh environments: elevated temperature, high gamma and neutron radiation fields, or the presence of aggressive chemicals. Motivations for these research and development projects are strongly focused on nuclear power plant inspections (particularly liquid-sodium cooled reactors), and nondestructive testing of high-temperature piping installations. It is anticipated that extensive use of permanently mounted robust transducers for in-service monitoring of petrochemical plants and power generations stations; quality control in manufacturing plants; and primary and secondary process monitoring in the fabrication of engineering materials will soon be made.

Excerpt from Materials Science and Engineering Laboratory Annual Report: Nas-Nrc Assessment Panel, February 13-14, 1992 Programmatic objectives of these and other core programs of the Laboratory have been reviewed by the individual Divisional subpanels and executive summaries of their findings are presented in this report as an overview for all panel members. Selected highlights of this years' programs follow in a summary format. These highlights are representative of Laboratory programs but are not meant to be all-inclusive. A more comprehensive review of the individual Division's programmatic outputs are given in the Division's Annual Reports. The prospects for 1992 represent continued growth in program expansion over 1991. Although the second funding increment for the Intelligent Processing of Materials initiative was not appropriated for FY 1992, limited, non-permanent funding was received from the Advanced Semiconductor initiative to enhance the modest msel program in electronic packaging materials. The new funds will be used to initiate projects in three areas: (1) to develop metrology to measure in the processing environment the degree of cure of thermosets used in microelectronic packagings; (2) to develop measurement and test methods to determine component solderability and the optimization of production-line soldering conditions; and (3) to develop the measurement technology to determine mechanical properties of thin-film materials typically used in fabrication of electronic packages and interconnections. Review of the Research Program of the U.S. DRIVE Partnership: Fifth Report follows on four previous reviews of the FreedomCAR and Fuel Partnership, which was the predecessor of the U.S. DRIVE Partnership. The U.S. DRIVE (Driving Research and Innovation for Vehicle Efficiency and Energy Sustainability) vision, according to the charter of the Partnership, is this: American consumers have a broad range of affordable personal transportation choices that reduce petroleum consumption and significantly reduce harmful emissions from the transportation sector. Its mission is as follows: accelerate the development of pre-competitive and innovative technologies to enable a full range of efficient and clean advanced light-duty vehicles (LDVs), as well as related energy infrastructure. The Partnership focuses on precompetitive research and development (R&D) that can help to accelerate the emergence of advanced technologies to be commercialization-feasible. The guidance for the work of the U.S. DRIVE Partnership as well as the priority setting and targets for needed research are provided by joint industry/government technical teams. This structure has been demonstrated to be an effective means of identifying high-priority, long-term precompetitive research needs for each technology with which the Partnership is involved. Technical areas in which research and development as well as technology validation programs have been pursued include the following: internal combustion engines (ICEs) potentially operating on conventional and various alternative fuels, automotive fuel cell power systems, hydrogen storage systems (especially onboard vehicles), batteries and other forms of electrochemical energy storage, electric propulsion systems, hydrogen production and delivery, and materials leading to vehicle weight reductions.

Quality Management In Forensic Science written by Sean Doyle and has been published by Academic Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-11-20 with Law categories.

Forensic science has been under scrutiny for some time, since the release of the NAS report in 2009. The report cited the need for standardized practices and the accreditation of crime labs. No longer can the forensic community take the position that cross-examination in a courtroom will expose weaknesses in methodology and execution. Quality Management in Forensic Science covers a wide spectrum of forensic disciplines, relevant ISO and non-ISO standards, accreditation and quality management systems necessary in any forensic science laboratory. Written by a globally well-respected forensic scientist with decades of experience in the forensic science laboratory and on the stand, as an expert witness who is also a Fellow of both the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences. This book will be a must-have resource for all forensic science stakeholders, particularly law enforcement agents and lawyers less familiar with the impact of quality management on the reliability of scientific evidence. A comprehensive, multidisciplinary reference of scientific practices for use in the forensic laboratory Coverage from DNA to toxicology, from trace evidence to crime scene and beyond Extensive review of ISO and non-ISO standards, accreditation, QMS and much more Written by a foremost forensic scientist with decades of experience in the laboratory and as an expert witness
