Sie erwarten Kohärenz, ein möglicherweise polyphones Sinnganzes - oder intellektuelles Vergnügen an den gebotenen Inkohärenzen. So entstehen komplexe Sinnstrukturen, eine erzählte Welt, die durch den Prozess des "Diegetisierens", eine Rezipientenaktivität, erst zur in sich stimmigen synthetisiert wird. So the philosopher's way to be is the source (Quelle) of his values and of his basic model; it is an important way of understanding thrall. It appears, now, that the thought of this paper could be simplified. The primary notion is the philosopher's "way to be." Style, locus of interest, nisus and way of thought can then be seen as growing out of this, as particular aspects or expressions of it. This entire paper then would be an attempt to come to grips with the primary notion. How is a "way to be" related to what is normally called a philo sopher's views or theories (the formulable core)? Is it not irrelevant as non-implicatory fact, like biographical details or social background? I do not think so. A philosopher's way to be is not external fact to the formulable core of his thought. It is not "internal" either in the logical sense. It is what allows us to comprehend his explicit views.

Seit der Antike haben sich Philosophen sehr aufmerksam und eindringlich mit 'memoria' und 'reminiscentia', mit Gedächtnis und Erinnerung beschäftigt. Erst in der Neuzeit und insbesondere in der Moderne ist das Thema "Erinnerung" zu einem Problemtitel geraten, und zwar wegen der Bilder, in denen unser Erinnern sich veranschaulicht. War es doch Immanuel Kant, der die fatale Behauptung aufgestellt hat: "wenn man den Begriff nicht von Bildern ablösen kann, wird man niemals rein und fehlerfrei denken können". Seitdem fällt es den Philosophen schwer, in und mit Bildern zu denken, und manche, zum Beispiel Edmund Husserl, wollten darum die Bilder aus der Erinnerung vertreiben. Das aber hat bedenkliche Folgen für unser Verständnis von Bewußtsein, Subjektivität und Personalität. Die Rede von der Erinnerungsvergessenheit der Philosophie ist jedenfalls nicht unbegründet - deshalb habe ich dieses Buch geschrieben. Und ich habe mich bemüht, es so zu schreiben, daß es auch für denjenigen noch lesbar bleibt, der im "Fach Philosophie" nicht zuhause ist; denn wer ein bewußtes Leben führen will, muß das im flüchtigen Strom seiner Erinnerungsbilder tun.
