Faint Praise written by Gail Pool and has been published by University of Missouri Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-07-06 with Literary Criticism categories.

For more than two hundred years, book reviewers have influenced American readers, setting our literary agenda by helping us determine not only what we read but also what we think about what we read. And for nearly as long, critics of these critics have lambasted book reviews for their overpraise, hostility, banality, and bias. Faint Praise takes a hard and long-overdue look at the institution of book reviewing. Gail Pool, herself an accomplished reviewer and review editor, analyzes the inner workings of this troubled trade to show how it works—and why it so often fails to work well. She reveals why bad reviewing happens despite good intentions and how it is that so many intelligent people who love books can say so many unintelligent things on their behalf. Reviewers have the power to award prestige to authors, give prominence to topics, and shape opinion and taste; yet most readers have little knowledge of why certain books are selected for review, why certain reviewers are selected to review them, and why they so often praise books that aren’t all that good. Pool takes readers behind the scenes to describe how editors choose books for review and assign them to reviewers, and she examines the additional roles played by publishers, authors, and readers. In describing the context of reviewing, she reveals a culture with little interest in literature, much antipathy to criticism, and a decided weakness for praise. In dissecting the language of reviews, Pool demonstrates how it often boils down to unbelievable hype. Pool explores the multifaceted world of book reviewing today, contrasting traditional methods of reviewing with alternative book coverage, from Amazon.com to Oprah, and suggesting how the more established practices could be revised. She also explores the divide between service journalism practiced by reviewers versus the alleged high art served up by literary critics—and what this fuzzy boundary between reviewing and criticism really means. This is the first book to analyze the field in depth, weighing the inherent difficulties of reviewing against the unacceptable practices that undermine the very reasons we read—and need—reviews. Faint Praise is a book not just for those who create and review books but also for everyone who loves books. By demystifying this hidden process, Pool helps everyone understand how to read reviews—and better decide what to read.

Arising out of a devotional and enthusiastic religious movement that swept across most of northern and eastern India in the period from the fourteenth through the seventeenth centuries, the powerful and moving lyrics collected and elegantly translated here depict the love of Radha for the god Krishna—a love whose intensity and range of emotions trace the course of all true love between man and woman and between man and God. Intermingling physical and metaphysical imagery, the spiritual yearning for the divine is articulated in the passionate language of intense sensual desire for an irresistible but ultimately unpossessable lover, thus touching a resonant chord in our humanity.

During and following the 2004 Hurricane Season, some of our members felt led to assemble a collection of poetry, which lifted praises up to our Lord for the mercy He showed to us. It was therapeutic for us and helped rid ourselves of frustrations and anxieties that had kept us in bondage during and after these storms. Many in our area sustained major damage to their businesses and homes. Some of our members were among them. We have assembled these poems into this anthology to the Glory of God our Heavenly Father, His Son our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit our Comforter! FBC Melbourne became a shelter for displaced persons, recovery workers and a staging area for disaster relief work in Florida supported by the Salvation Army, the Red Cross and Southern Baptist Relief Organizations for several months in 2004. All the proceeds received from the sale of this Anthology will be used to support the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief Operations our Church is committed to carrying out wherever and whenever we are called upon. During the 2005 Hurricane Season, we provided several teams for recovery assistance in Hattiesburg and Biloxi, Mississippi and Lake Charles, Louisiana.

The Church Becomes What the Church Sings! In the most basic sense, worship is the act of offering praise to God. But worship is a much more powerful act than we are often aware. This unique anthology brings together over 160 poems directly inspired by the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Readers will be surprised that such world rand authors as Yeats, Rilke, Borges, Eliot, Plath, Milosz, Lawrence, Pasternak, Celan, Akhmatova, Auden, and Wilbur are incisive biblical commentators as well. The poems, which range in tone from playful to confrontational and from ironic to sublime, are set alongside the biblical passages that inspired them. The Annunciation, the Nativity, the Temptations in the Wilderness, the Sermon on the Mount, the Parables, the Last Supper, the Crucifixion and Resurrection, are just a few of the narratives that have captured these writers' imaginations. In revisting 2000 year old texts with a twentieth-century sensibility, the poets here bring meanin to them, and offer us a renewed appreciation of their importance.
