Er überschreitet Gattungs- und ‚Epochen‘-Grenzen zwischen Frühaufklärung und Spätromantik und rekonstruiert auf breiter literarischer und nicht-literarischer Quellenbasis die denk- und wissensgeschichtlichen Voraussetzungen der Literatur der europäischen Aufklärung. Titzmann geht sowohl von einzelnen Autorenœuvres (Wieland, Klinger, Goethe, Schiller, Eichendorff u. v. a.) als auch von literaturübergreifenden Diskursen aus und fragt nach den Beziehungen zwischen Literatur und (Popular-)Philosophie, Theologie, Medizin, Anthropologie und Jurisprudenz. Aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven wird transparent, wie Literatur ‚Wissen‘ über Natur und Gesellschaft diskursi-viert, inszeniert und transformiert, also z.B. die Konstruktion von Emotionalität und Affektivität, von Familie und Sexualität (Inzest, Pornographie), von Altersklassen und von Staat und Politik verhandelt. The Strangeness of Gods combines studies of changes in modern interpretations of Greek religion with studies of changes in Athenian ritual. The combination is necessary in order to combat influential stereotypes: that Greek religion consisted of ritual without theological speculation, that ritual is inherently conservative. To re-examine the evidence for Greek rituals and their interpretation is also to re-examine our own preconceptions and prejudices. The argument presented by S. C. Humphreys tries to bring Greek texts closer to the `classic' texts of other civilizations, and religion, as a form of speculative thought, closer to science. Her studies of Athenian rituals put this emphasis on changing interpretations into practice, showing that the Athenians thought about their rites as well as celebrating them.

This book contributes to the understanding of Dionysos, the Greek god of wine, dancing, theatre and ecstasy, by putting together 30 studies of classical scholars. They combine the analysis of specific instances of particular dimensions of the god in cult, myth, literature and iconography, with general visions of Dionysos in antiquity and modern times. Only from the combination of different perspectives can we grasp the complex personality of Dionysos, and the forms of his presence in different cults, literary genres, and artistic forms, from Mycenaean times to late antiquity. The ways in which Dionysos was experienced may vary in each author, each cult, and each genre in which this god is involved. Therefore, instead of offering a new all-encompassing theory that would immediately become partial, the book narrows the focus on specific aspects of the god. The Archaic takes as its major reference points C.G. Jung's classic essay, 'Archaic Man' (1930), and Ernesto Grassi's paper on 'Archaic Theories of History' (1990). Moving beyond the confines of a Jungian framework to include other methodological approaches, this book explores the concept of the archaic. Defined as meaning 'old-fashioned', 'primitive', 'antiquated', the archaic is, in fact, much more than something very, very old: it is timeless, inasmuch as it is before time itself. Archē, Urgrund, Ungrund, 'primordial darkness', 'eternal nothing' are names for something essentially nameless, yet whose presence we nevertheless intuit. This book focuses on the reception of myth in the tradition of German Idealism or Romanticism (Creuzer, Schelling, Nietzsche), which not only looked back to earlier thinkers (such as Jacob Boehme) but also laid down roots for developments in twentieth-century thought (Ludwig Klages, Martin Heidegger).
