Excerpt from Anthropology and Modern Life ON november 17, 1961, the Council of Fellows of the American Anthropological Association meeting at Philadelphia, the cradle of American democracy, passed this resolution, thus once more providing scientific support for those fighters for equality and brotherhood for whom democracy is a moral issue. At this moment Of history when the Specter of racism is once more walking abroad, it is especially fortunate and appropriate to have reissued in a popular edition the definitive statement on race and culture by the man who more than anyone else was responsible for providing the conceptual framework and scientific underpinnings for the anthropological position on this important con temporary problem. Franz Boas wrote Anthropology and Modern Life as a declaration of faith after more than thirty years Of research in the field Of race and culture. An earlier publication on the same theme was translated into German (kultur and Rome, Leipzig, 1914) and was eventually honored by a prominent place in the Nazi auto-da-fe. Anthropology and Modern Life, first published in 1929, addresses itself to an immensely broad field with clarity, introducing anthropology as a unique and coherent discipline, and demonstrating its importance in the understanding of socio-cultural change throughout history. The author covers varied and diverse areas of study: ethnicity, including a lengthy discussion of the concepts of 'race' and 'nationality'; criminology, and the importance of hereditary and environmental factors in producing criminals; education, and the associated issues of gender, class, and what would now be called 'brainwashing'; and also the comparison between 'modern' and 'primitive' cultures, taking note of the development of socio-political institutions such as marriage and property.

Excerpt from Social Anthropology To this extent, then, I see no division in my task. I have, however, to remind the reader that I am not by training a philosopher but a social anthropologist and I cannot finally hope to offer more than the material upon which a philosopher might work. Given the relatively short scope allowed to this essay I have been obliged to choose some device which would enable me to perform the task proposed In the most economical manner. I shall therefore discuss the development of social anthropology in time and I shall see that development as the constant interaction of speculation about man in society, on the one hand, and the observation of man in society, on the other. I shall suggest that the tendency in either the empirical or speculative approach to claim a monopoly of truth has called for a corrective from the other, and that the distinct ive manner in which this opposition has been transcended constitutes the individuality of social anthropology today. Excerpt from Boas Anniversary Volume: Anthropological Papers Written in Honor of Franz Boas This call has met with a hearty, unanimous approval, to which the present volume bears witness. The general sentiment of sympathy with this matter was well expressed by Mr. F. W. Hodge, editor of The Amer ican Anthropologist, in a letter dated Dec. I 5, 1905, as fol lows: I am very glad of this proposed action, both because the great value of Dr. Boas's work, his energy in advancing the interests of anthropology, and his many personal qualities, are thus to be recognized, and because in this country we are rather prone, I fear, to forget that there is a sentimental side to scientific life. Unfortunately Mr. Hodge was prevented from writing an article which he had planned for this occasion, owing to ill health. Mirror For Man written by Clyde Kluckhohn and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-09-25 with Social Science categories.

While the world has undoubtedly been shrinking, at the same time it has grown more complex. The likelihood of culture clashes leading to outright conflict is high, perhaps higher than ever. As Andrea L. Smith convincingly argues in her new introduction to this classic work, certain questions are as valid today as in 1949, when Mirror for Man was first published. Can anthropology break down prejudices that exist between peoples and nations? Can knowledge of past human behavior help solve the world’s modern problems? What effect will American attitudes likely have on the future of the world? In Mirror for Man, Clyde Kluckhohn scrutinizes anthropology, showing how the discipline can contribute to the reconciliation of conflicting cultures. He questions age-old race theories, shows how people came to be as they are, and examines limitations in how human beings can be molded. Taking up one of the most vital questions in the post-World War II world, whether international order can be achieved by domination, Kluckhohn demonstrates that cultural clashes drive much of the world’s conflict, and shows how we can help resolve it if only we are willing to work for joint understanding. By interpreting human behavior, Kluckhohn reveals that anthropology can make a practical contribution through its predictive power in the realm of politics, social attitudes, and group psychology. Andrea L. Smith’s new introduction provides convincing evidence for the continuing importance of one of the earliest “public intellectuals.”

Excerpt from Anthropological Studies Whatever shortcomings may be discovered in the volume must be attributed to want of skill in the writer rather than to lack of interest in the subject matters treated, which, being selected from what may be looked upon as the romance of Anthropology, cannot fail to attract readers who have any taste for the pre historic development Of the human race, as illustrated not only by the discoveries Of archaeologists in the graves of long-forgotten races; but also by the manners and customs of the savages of to-day, who may be held to continue the slow march Of the ancient world, in the rear of the whirl and confusion of the army of modern progressionists.
