The Anthropology of the Name—written almost twenty years ago but never translated into English, and updated here with a new preface by the author—works out a groundbreaking theory of the social function of political categorizations, exploring in the anthropological field what Alain Badiou and Jean-Claude Milner analysed, respectively, in the fields of philosophy, linguistics and psychoanalytic theory. Sylvain Lazarus calls the site of the book an ‘enthusiastic site’: enthusiastic about the fact that a new conception can be opposed to the end of the political and intellectual referents of the great period that extends from the Russian Revolution to today—a period that the author divides into different sequences. The enthusiasm is also about the invention of the ‘sequentiality’ of politics and of ‘saturation’ (a method of investigating past politics as intellectualities of politics); and it is about the problematic of ‘historical modes of politics’, which identifies the politics that has taken place or that is taking place as rare and sequential, that is to say, as existing for a lapse of time that is datable. This is an enthusiastic book about the investigation of thought, about the statement that ‘people think’, and about the statement that ‘thought is relation of the real’.

The Tsimshian people of coastal British Columbia use a system of hereditary name-titles in which names are treated as objects of inheritable wealth. Human agency and social status reside in names rather than in the individuals who hold these names, and the politics of succession associated with names and name-taking rituals have been, and continue to be, at the center of Tsimshian life. Becoming Tsimshian examines the way in which names link members of a lineage to a past and to the places where that past unfolded. At traditional potlatch feasts, for example, collective social and symbolic behavior �gives the person to the name.� Oral histories recounted at a potlatch describe the origins of the name, of the house lineage, and of the lineage's rights to territories, resources, and heraldic privileges. This ownership is renewed and recognized by successive generations, and the historical relationship to the land is remembered and recounted in the lineage's chronicles, or adawx. In investigating the different dimensions of the Tsimshian naming system, Christopher F. Roth draws extensively on recent literature, archival reference, and elders in Tsimshian communities. Becoming Tsimshian, which covers important themes in linguistic and cultural anthropology and ethnic studies, will be of great value to scholars in Native American studies and Northwest Coast anthropology, as well as in linguistics.

Among the people of Avatip, a community in the Sepik region of Papua New Guinea, the most prestigious and valued forms of wealth are personal names. In this intriguing study, Simon Harrison analyzes the significance of names in the context of Avatip ritual, cosmology, and concepts of the person, and shows how the Avatip system of names parallels the gift-exchange systems of many other Melanesian societies. In ritualized debates, which form the arena of Avatip political life, rival leaders and the groups they represent struggle in oratorical contests for the possession of strategic names, and as they do so, continually manipulate myth, ritual and cosmology. By exploiting the inner possibilities of this symbolically constituted economy, these competitive processes over the past century have been progressively transforming the political system from a relatively egalitarian type to one based on hereditary inequality and rank. The author offers a critique of the analytical separation of economy and the symbolic order, arguing that it obscures the processes of political evolution in Melanesia and disguises the fundamental similarities underlying the sociocultural diversity of the region.
