Excerpt from Anti-Theistic Theories The present volume is closely connected with the work entitled 'Theism, ' which was published in 1877. The two works may be regarded as two parts of a system of Natural Theology which is still very far from complete. The chief omission in the present volume relates to Agnosticism. The explanation of the omission is that the author was anxious to avoid, in a semi-popular work, abstruse metaphysical discussion, and has long cherished the hope of being able, at some future time, to publish a historical account and critical examination of the various phases of Modern Agnosticism. He has again to thank Mr James A. Campbell of Stracathro for kindly assisting him in the work of revision. Excerpt from The Theistic Argument: As Affected by Recent Theories, a Course of Lectures Delivered at the Lowell Institute on Boston Speculative element, kept within due bounds, that imparted a peculiar fascination to his portrayal of historical persons and eras. When, therefore, he was invited to give a Course of Lectures at the Lowell Institute, in the spring of 1880, on the foundations of Natural Religion, he needed no other qualification than a careful review of the recent literature on the subject. This preparation was conscientiously made. In particular, the most prominent writers, as Mill, Spencer, Huxley, Dar win, Tyndall, who have dealt directly or indirectly with these topics from points of view more or less at variance with prevalent opinion, he examined afresh. At the same time he did not pass by the ablest of the later writers in defense of Theism. I perceive that he had profited especially by the perusal of Janet's thorough treatise on Final Causes, and Professor Flint's excellent volumes on Theism and anti-theistic Theories. The result of his reflections and researches appears on the pages which follow. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Christian Theism, Its Claims and Sanctions Analysis is the best key to clear and easy thought. Systems of truth, like machines, are often so complicated as to baffle thought, until they are taken to pieces. Theism is such a system. This fact has been observed in the following treatise. Arguments have been correlated and each assigned to its proper place. Elements in each argument have been carefully distinguished and separately set out. The character of every part, and its relation to the whole, have been invariably indicated. And the entire discussion has been simplified, as far as possible. The author has three objects in view: 1. To construct a progressive argument which shall be, not only logical in its methods and correct in its general conclusions, but likewise defensible in each individual part and item of it. 2. To free the subject, as far as may be, from those obscurities and difficulties of which students in Theism are wont to complain. 3. To present the subject - without dodging any of its profound problems - in such clear and simple manner as to commend it to the general reader who is willing to think as he reads. The theist ought not to be satisfied with few readers, especially when the atheist is writing for the many. Excerpt from Theism Under Natural Law: As Related to Old Testament Criticism and to the Theodicy of Lux Mundi This has been the original and primary object, positively considered; but a secondary object of a negative character has been to place in contrast with the elements of Biblical Theism, and with Orthodox Christian Theology, that modern system of doctrine sometimes called the New Theology, or Higher Criticism, as set forth in Lux Mundi. On both these subjects the author desires to say a few words. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Alan Watts In Late Twentieth Century Discourse written by Peter J. Columbus and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-11-17 with Psychology categories.

This book is an anthology of commentary and criticism written within the transitional period between Alan Watts’ 1973 death and the twenty-first century intellectual horizon. Comprised of 16 chapters written and published between 1974 and 1994, with up-to-date introductions from the essayists and other contemporary thinkers, this volume opens a window onto unexplored grounds of Alan Watts’ impact within late-twentieth-century discourse – an intermediate space where scholars reoriented their bearings through changing times and emerging academic trends. Offering varied explanations and assessments of Alan Watts, including his influence on the Beat and Hippie generations, and his popularization of Zen Buddhism in America, it tackles unaddressed questions within the milieu of late-twentieth-century America from the Reagan Revolution and religious conservatism, to paradigm shifts in Buddhist studies and the rise of post-colonial theory. Contributors’ post-mortem analyses and critiques of Watts allow for a thematic rendering of their consonance or dissonance with noted Beat, Hippie, and Zen Buddhism themes of his lifetime. This volume will appeal to scholars and students of humanistic psychology, transpersonal psychology, the psychology of religion, comparative religion, and American studies.
