Anhand der Biografie von Nicolaas Rost schreibt Markus Wegewitz eine Erfahrungsgeschichte des Antifaschismus im Europa des 20. Jahrhunderts. Wie kann Antifaschismus als Lebensentwurf und politische Position in der Geschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts verstanden werden? Markus Wegewitz bietet einen bewegungsgeschichtlichen Längsschnitt von der Entstehung der ersten antifaschistischen Organisationen nach dem Ende des Ersten Weltkrieges bis in die 1960er-Jahre. Anhand der Biografie des niederländischen Journalisten, Übersetzers und Kommunisten Nicolaas (Nico) Rost nutzt der Autor einen erfahrungsgeschichtlichen Zugang zu antifaschistischen Organisationsformen, Ideenwelten und politischer Kultur. Auf der Suche nach einem Instrument zur Mobilisierung gegen Faschismus und Nationalsozialismus versuchten Antifaschist:innen wie Rost, bürgerliche Kulturtraditionen im Sinne eines sozialistischen Humanismus zu interpretieren. Im Mittelpunkt der Studie stehen neben dieser Politisierung der Kultur auch die Prägung des Antifaschismus durch den (trans)-nationalen Kommunismus und der Umgang mit den nationalsozialistischen Verbrechen. Antifaschist:innen entwickelten nach 1945 aufgrund dieser Erfahrungen Maßstäbe historischer Gerechtigkeit, die sie gegen den Widerstand insbesondere der deutschen Nachkriegsgesellschaften durchzusetzen versuchten.

In the 1930s, anarchists and socialists among Spanish immigrants living in the United States created España Libre (Free Spain) as a response to the Nationalist takeover in their homeland. Worker-oriented and avowedly antifascist, the grassroots periodical raised money for refugees and political prisoners while advancing left-wing culture and politics. España Libre proved both visionary and durable, charting an alternate path toward a modern Spain and enduring until democracy's return to the country in 1977. Montse Feu merges España Libre's story with the drama of the Spanish immigrant community's fight against fascism. The periodical emerged as part of a transnational effort to link migrants and new exiles living in the United States to antifascist networks abroad. Innerhalb des Ostblocks sollte durch ein abgestimmtes Vorgehen auf der internationalen Bühne Einigkeit demonstriert werden, gleichzeitig führten nationale Interessen zu je eigenen Wegen in der Strafverfolgung. Die in diesem Band zusammengetragenen Aufsätze widmen sich der Geschichte der Strafprozesse zu nationalsozialistischen Verbrechen in Ungarn, der DDR, Polen, der Tschechoslowakei und der Sowjetunion nach der "Tauwetterphase" und fragen nach den Voraussetzungen und Eigenheiten dieser Verfahren. About 15 years after the end of the war, a second wave of trials against Nazi criminals occurred in many Eastern Bloc states, which followed a different logic than the ones immediately after the war. At the height of the Cold War in the 1960s, the trials on the one hand obliged cooperation between East and West, on the other hand they were determined by the defensive attitude towards the respective opponent in the system conflict. Within the Eastern bloc, unity was to be demonstrated through a coordinated approach on the international stage, while at the same time national interests led to their own paths in criminal prosecution. The essays collected in this volume are devoted to the history of criminal trials on National Socialist crimes in Hungary, the GDR, Poland, Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union after the "thaw" and ask about the preconditions and peculiarities of these proceedings. What rules applied to the trials? What goals did they pursue? And last but not least: What significance did the Holocaust have in the clarification of the crimes?
