Cultures Of Eschatology written by Veronika Wieser and has been published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-07-20 with History categories.

In all religions, in the medieval West as in the East, ideas about the past, the present and the future were shaped by expectations related to the End. The volumes Cultures of Eschatology explore the many ways apocalyptic thought and visions of the end intersected with the development of pre-modern religio-political communities, with social changes and with the emergence of new intellectual and literary traditions. The two volumes present a wide variety of case studies from the early Christian communities of Antiquity, through the times of the Islamic invasion and the Crusades and up to modern receptions, from the Latin West to the Byzantine Empire, from South Yemen to the Hidden Lands of Tibetan Buddhism. Examining apocalypticism, messianism and eschatology in medieval Christian, Islamic, Hindu and Buddhist communities, the contributions paint a multi-faceted picture of End-Time scenarios and provide their readers with a broad array of source material from different historical contexts. The first volume, Empires and Scriptural Authorities, examines the formation of literary and visual apocalyptic traditions, and the role they played as vehicles for defining a community’s religious and political enemies. The second volume, Time, Death and Afterlife, focuses on key topics of eschatology: death, judgment, afterlife and the perception of time and its end. It also analyses modern readings and interpretations of eschatological concepts.

Fr Hes Christentum Im Antiken Strahlungsfeld written by Wolfgang Speyer and has been published by Mohr Siebeck this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with History categories.

English summary: In this volume, Wolfgang Speyer continues his studies of the relationship between antiquity and Christianity. His goal is to make the differences as well as the common ground between the ancient polytheistic religions and Judaism and Christianity, the monotheistic revealed religions, easier to understand. He shows the continuities as well as the breaks in the spiritual legacy of antiquity and Christianity since the late Middle Ages and explains why, in his opinion, separating late Christian antiquity and the early Middle Ages is wrong. In philological, historical, systematic and philosophical essays, the author assumes that man is intrinsically a homo religiosus, and that religiousness therefore is also the source of philosophy and science.

Paul And The Stoics written by Troels Engberg-Pedersen and has been published by Westminster John Knox Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-01-01 with Religion categories.

"Dr. Engberg-Pedersen shows how a range of problems encountered in twentieth-century interpretation of three major Pauline letters (Philippians, Galatians, Romans) may be overcome by reading the epistles in the light of ancient Stoic ethics. He discusses literary, conceptual and theological issues: for example, the unity and purpose of the letters; the relationship in the letters between theology and ethics; the logical character and shape of Pauline exhortation; the relationship in Paul between cognition and participation; the meaning of righteousness from faith; Paul's handling of the Jewish law. The author illuminates the central core of Paul's thought by applying the Stoic perspective and argues that scholars must move beyond the traditional Judaism/Hellenism divide to reach a comprehensive and accurate reading of Paul's letters"--P. The New Testament Christological Hymns written by Jack T. Sanders and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-12-02 with Religion categories.

A study of the hymnic and liturgical material in the New Testament which describes Christ's nature and person. Professor Sanders analyzes the hymns in detail and finds in them a common mythological pattern. He traces its origin to a particular and unorthodox branch of Judaism which is itself a branch of the 'wisdom' tradition where the thanksgiving hymn had its home. His conclusions therefore have considerable importance and implications for questions about the origins of Gnosticism and its influence on Christianity. This is the full-scale historical religious study of the New Testament Christological hymns, and English readers will find particularly useful Professor Sanders' critical survey of recent continental scholarship on this and related subjects.
