The nationally motivated hostility towards Jews did not just start with Richard Wagner or the anti-Semitic writings produced in Imperial Germany from 1871 onwards. As the study shows, even the writers of the Romantic generation in the early 19th century drew up their idea of a "German character" which was rigorously delineated from alleged Jewish characteristics. This is shown in the study using both essayistic and fictional texts by Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano among others.

Die Romantik gilt hier als ein Zeitalter, in dem beide Formen eine große Rolle spielen, ineinander verschmelzen und verwischen. Der Begriff des Antijudaismus wurde in der ersten Hälfte des 19.Jahrhundert geprägt und geht zurück bis in die Anfänge des Christentums, die Antike und das Mittelalter. Diese religiös begründete Judenfeindschaft lehnte alle jüdischen Glaubensinhalte und ihre Praktiken ab und verachtete später auch die Juden selbst. Inwiefern diese Begriffe inhaltlich mit Achim von Arnims Rede übereinstimmen, wird in der vorliegenden Untersuchung dargelegt. Zudem werden Hintergrundinformationen zur christlich-deutschen Tischgesellschaft, zu Stereotypen im Allgemeinen und speziell dem Stereotyp der jüdischen Mimikry gegeben. Der Text wird auf Anzeichen der jüdischen Mimikry untersucht und gewertet. Der Schluss bietet einen Ausblick über den heutigen Antisemitismus.

This book focuses on the national conceptualization of Judaism and Jews by German neo-Pietists from the early Restoration (1815) until the New Era (neue Ära, 1858-1861), at which point Prussia and other German states embarked on a liberal course. The book demonstrates how a certain understanding of nationalism by Awakened Christians, who were associated with political conservatism, was applied to themselves as belonging to a German nation, and correspondingly to Jews as members of a distinct Jewish nation. It argues that this kind of nationalization by neo-Pietists–among them theologians, intellectuals, and members of the agrarian aristocracy–was interwoven with their religion of the heart, and drew on a tradition of a community of kinship established by the earlier German Pietism since the late seventeenth century. The book sheds new light on the accommodation of nationalism by German Pietist conservatives, who so far were considered as opponents of the national idea. At the same time, it shows that their posture towards Jews was not merely anti-Semitic. It emerged from a specific religious-national synthesis, and aimed at an alternative solution to the Jewish Question, other than emancipation, in the form of Jewish national political independence.

In 2013, Germany celebrated the bicentennial of the so-called Wars of Liberation (1813-15). These wars were the culmination of the Prussian struggle against Napoleon between 1806 and 1815, which occupied a key position in German national historiography and memory. Although these conflicts have been analyzed in thousands of books and articles, much of the focus has been on the military campaigns and alliances. Karen Hagemann argues that we cannot achieve a comprehensive understanding of these wars and their importance in collective memory without recognizing how the interaction of politics, culture, and gender influenced these historical events and continue to shape later recollections of them. She thus explores the highly contested discourses and symbolic practices by which individuals and groups interpreted these wars and made political claims, beginning with the period itself and ending with the centenary in 1913.
