This book explores the confrontation of radically assimilated Jews with the violent collapse of their envisioned integration into a cosmopolitan European society, which culminated during the Holocaust. This confrontation is examined through the biography of the German-speaking intellectual and prominent communist theoretician of the Jewish question Otto Heller (1897–1945), focusing on the tension between his Jewish origins and his universalistic political convictions. Radical Assimilation in the Face of the Holocaust traces the development of Hellerʼs position on the Jewish question in three phases: how he grew up to become a typical Central European "non-Jewish Jew" (1897–1931); how he became exceptional in that category by focusing his intellectual work on the Jewish question (1931–1939); and how he reacted to the persecution and murder of European Jewry as a member of the Resistance in occupied France and in Auschwitz (1939–1945). Breaking with the common portrayal of Heller as a self-hating Jew, Tom Navon argues instead that Heller came to lay the foundations for the groundbreaking recognition by communists of worldwide Jewish national solidarity.

The nationally motivated hostility towards Jews did not just start with Richard Wagner or the anti-Semitic writings produced in Imperial Germany from 1871 onwards. As the study shows, even the writers of the Romantic generation in the early 19th century drew up their idea of a "German character" which was rigorously delineated from alleged Jewish characteristics. This is shown in the study using both essayistic and fictional texts by Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano among others.

Sie sind auf kollektive Selbstbilder bezogen. Die Historische Wissenssoziologie des modernen Antisemitismus arbeitet den innovativen Ansatz, den Antisemitismus in seiner Relation zu einem kollektiven Selbstbild zu analysieren, historisch aus: Sie rekonstruiert die Entwicklung des Antisemitismus vom ausgehenden 18. bis zum späten 19. Jahrhundert als Prozess seiner Nationalisierung. Triebkräfte dieses Prozesses auf der Ebene des Wissens sind Veränderungen in der sozialen Organisation der modernen Gesellschaft. Die Untersuchung hat erhebliche Konsequenzen für Differenzierungen, die sich in der Antisemitismusforschung durchgesetzt haben, und damit für das Verständnis der Geschichte und Entwicklung des modernen Antisemitismus. So wird etwa die etablierte Unterscheidung zwischen »religiösem", »kulturellem" und »rassistischem" Antisemitismus begrifflich neu gefasst: Es handelt sich um Variationen eines in seiner Grundstruktur nationalen Antisemitismus.

The most prominent story of nineteenth-century German and French Jewry has focused on Jewish adoption of liberal middle-class values. The Modernity of Others points to an equally powerful but largely unexplored aspect of modern Jewish history: the extent to which German and French Jews sought to become modern by criticizing the anti-modern positions of the Catholic Church. Drawing attention to the pervasiveness of anti-Catholic anticlericalism among Jewish thinkers and activists from the late eighteenth to the early twentieth century, the book turns the master narrative of Western and Central European Jewish history on its head. From the moment in which Jews began to enter the fray of modern European politics, they found that Catholicism served as a convenient foil that helped them define what it meant to be a good citizen, to practice a respectable religion, and to have a healthy family life. Throughout the long nineteenth century, myriad Jewish intellectuals, politicians, and activists employed anti-Catholic tropes wherever questions of political and national belonging were at stake: in theoretical treatises, parliamentary speeches, newspaper debates, the founding moments of the Reform movement, and campaigns against antisemitism.
