Zwischen 1967 und 1969 entwickelte sich ein fast die ganzen Studentenbewegung umfassender Anti-Israel-Konsens, der erkennbare antisemitische Züge trug und sich nicht auf den Staat Israel und die dort lebenden Juden beschränkte, sondern sich häufig gegen die gesamte Judenheit richtete. Diese Entwicklung zum Antizionismus soll anhand der Zeitschifft „konkret“ untersucht werden. Sie war ein linksgerichtetes Blatt, die als wichtiges Organ der Studentenbewegung fungierte und außerdem die journalistische Heimat der Ulrike Meinhof war. Die Untersuchung behandelt den Einstellungswandel zum Staat Israel und zu den Juden in der Berichterstattung der Zeitschrift innerhalb des untersuchten Zeitraums (vom Eichmann-Prozess bis zum Olympia-Attentat) und versucht die Frage zu beantworten, inwiefern bei den in der Zeitschrift abgedruckten antizionistischen Ausführungen antijüdische Vorurteile und sekundärantisemitische Komponenten zu erkennen sind. Die Studie wirft außerdem interessante Fragen auf zur Unterwanderung der 1968er Bewegung durch die DDR und zum Zusammenhang zwischen die durch die SED initiierte Antispringer-Kampagne und der Einzug des Antizionismus in der Studentenbewegung.

This book examines how left-wing political and cultural movements in Western Europe have considered Jews in the last two hundred years. The chapters seek to answer the following question: has there been a specific way in which the Left has considered Jewish minorities? The recent rise of antisemitism in the United States has been well documented and linked to groups and ideologies associated with the far right. In From Occupation to Occupy, Sina Arnold argues that antisemitism can also be found as an "invisible prejudice" on the left. Based on participation in left-wing events and demonstrations, interviews with activists, and analysis of left-wing social movement literature, Arnold argues that a pattern for enabling antisemitism exists. Although open antisemitism on the left is very rare, there are recurring instances of "antisemitic trivialization," in which antisemitism is not perceived as a relevant issue in its own right, leading to a lack of empathy for Jewish concerns and grievances. Arnold's research also reveals a pervasive defensiveness against accusations of antisemitism in left-wing politics, with activists fiercely dismissing the possibility of prejudice against Jews within their movements and invariably shifting discussions to critiques of Israel or other forms of racism. From Occupation to Occupy offers potential remedies for this situation and suggests that a progressive political movement that takes antisemitism seriously can be a powerful force for change in the United States.

The Frankfurt School’s own legacy is best preserved by exercising an immanent critique of its premises and the conclusions to which they often led. By distinguishing between what is still and what is no longer alive in Critical Theory, these essays seek to demonstrate its continuing relevance in the 21st century. Fifty years after the appearance of The Dialectical Imagination, his pioneering history of the Frankfurt School, Martin Jay reflects on what may be living and dead in its legacy. Rather than treating it with filial piety as a fortress to be defended, he takes seriously its anti-systematic impulse and sensitivity to changing historical circumstances. Honouring the Frankfurt School's practice of immanent critique, he puts critical pressure on a number of its own ideas by probing their contradictory impulses. Among them are the pathologization of political deviance through stigmatizing "authoritarian personalities," the undefended theological premises of Walter Benjamin's work, and the ambivalence of its members' analyses of anti-Semitism and Zionism. Additional questions are asked about other time-honored Marxist themes: the meaning of alienation, the alleged damages of abstraction, and the advocacy of a politics based on a singular notion of the truth. Rather, however, than allowing these questions to snowball into an unwarranted repudiation of the Frankfurt School legacy as a whole, the essays also acknowledge a number of its still potent arguments. They explore its neglected, but now timely analysis of "racket society," Adorno's dialectical reading of aesthetic sublimation, and the unexpected implications of Benjamin's focus on the corpse for political theory. Jay shows that it is a still evolving theoretical tradition which offers resources for the understanding of–and perhaps even practical betterment–of our increasingly troubled world.

Jahrhundert Das Verhältnis linker Bewegungen zum Antisemitismus ist ein polarisierendes Thema. Auch in den USA stehen nicht erst seit den Anschlägen vom 11. September 2001 Bewegungen wie Occupy Wall Street, die Friedensbewegung oder pro-palästinensische Gruppen unter Antisemitismusverdacht. Häufig sind es ihre Kritik an Israel und damit verbundene Positionen und Aktionen wie Boykottaufrufe, die Anlass für erhitzte Debatten in den Medien, an Universitäten oder innerhalb sozialer Bewegungen wie auch der jüdisch-amerikanischen Community geben. Aufbauend auf einer empirisch-ethnografischen Studie will Sina Arnold Nüchternheit in diese Debatten bringen: Die Autorin analysiert die Sichtweisen von Aktivistinnen und Aktivisten der US-amerikanischen Linken auf Jüdinnen und Juden, das Judentum und Antisemitismus, aber auch auf Anschlussdiskurse wie Holocaust und Holocaustgedenken, Antirassismus, Kapitalismuskritik, die Politik der USA sowie Israel und den Nahostkonflikt. Sie bettet diese ein in die historische Entwicklung des Judentums und des Antisemitismus in den USA wie auch in verschiedene Epochen der Linken.
