Poesía de una gran fuerza literaria, el epigrama ejerció una gran influencia en toda la literatura posterior. Desde época helenística y durante toda la Antigüedad, el epigrama fue muy cultivado como género poético refinado y erudito. Pronto se hicieron antologías y recopilaciones de los poetas que lo utilizaron. Dos de las más importantes, la Guirnalda de Meleagro y la Guirnalda de Filipo, junto con otros textos y a través de diversas recopilaciones, han llegado hasta nosotros gracias a la Antología Palatina, obra de un compilador anónimo del siglo X y llamada así por el manuscrito que la contiene, encontrado en Heidelberg, capital del Palatinado. La Guirnalda de Meleagro, junto con otros epigramas helenísticos, forma el primer volumen de la Antología Palatina en esta colección; en éste se incluye la Guirnalda de Filipo, tesalonicense afincado en Roma en época de Nerón. Su intención era continuar la de Meleagro incluyendo a los autores posteriores a éste. En conjunto advertimos la enorme riqueza de esta modalidad: poemas de amor, de nostalgias, sepulcrales o eruditos, de maldición o de lamento; hay epitafios, dedicatorias, loas a poetas y a artistas, a la naturaleza... Poesía de una gran fuerza literaria, el epigrama ejerció una gran influencia en toda la literatura posterior. Entre los autores españoles, la huella de la Antología Palatina se deja sentir, entre otros, en Garcilaso de la Vega, Fray Luis de León, Lope de Vega y Quevedo.

Volumul de față, realizat de un grup de alumni ai Secției de Filologie Clasică a Universității din București, marchează trecerea Colecției Scriptores Byzantini sub egida Institutului de Studii Sud-Est Europene al Academiei Române și a Societății Române de Studii Bizantine și publicarea acesteia la Editura Universității din București. Cartea este o premieră în istoria traducerilor românești din literatura elină, fiind cea dintâi redare în distih elegiac (metru predominant în epigramele grecești) a întregului cuprins al cărții erotice din ciclul palatin. Adunate vreme de un mileniu și jumătate și rânduite în cincisprezece cărți, pe când Bizanțul, în plină renaștere macedoneană, își reînnoda legăturile cu tradiția elenistică, epigramele Antologiei Palatine transmit suflul Eladei întregi, și nu doar pe acela al corifeilor ei. Banalitatea, gestul mărunt, dedicația care își găsește locul pe obiectul dăruit celui drag, expresia iubirii caste și a celei vinovate, a lipsei de iubire sau a neputinței de a (mai) iubi și a (mai) fi iubit se regăsesc decantate în versurile Cărților a V-a și a XII-a ale acestei mirabile colecții. Cu ele ne-am propus să începem editarea și traducerea celor aproape patru mii cinci sute de poeme păstrate în florilegiul bizantin, însumând un număr de versuri apropiat de al poemelor homerice laolaltă. Am cuprins în volumul de față epigramele Cărții a V-a ‒ trei sute zece poeme ‒ și va urma, într-o ordine și un ritm pe care doar interesul cititorilor, preferințele și zelul traducătorilor le vor stabili, tot restul celor cincisprezece cărți. El libro XI de la Antología Palatina es la más amplia colección conservada de epigramas de tema convival y satírico-burlesco, que se datan desde época helenística hasta época bizantina, aunque su núcleo fundamental corresponde al siglo I d.C. Estos breves poemas tratan temas que van desde la celebración del vino y los banquetes, a sátiras de tipos humanos, como las de profesionales (médicos, astrólogos, poetas, etc.), costumbres (afeites femeninos, parásitos o desviaciones sexuales), vicios morales (envidia, adulación, avaricia, entre otros) o defectos físicos (pequeñez, fealdad, vejez, etc.). Resulta así una completa pintura de la sociedad de aquellos siglos, a través de una variadísima gama de recursos cómicos y de «agudezas» lingüísticas e intelectuales. Tanto los temas como los recursos empleados han tenido una influencia muy importante en la poesía posterior, en especial en la del Siglo de Oro. La Introducción ofrece una detallada visión de todos estos aspectos, así como también de la Antología Palatina en su conjunto.

Arguing that homosexuality of the classical era grew out of the prehistorical practice of initiatory homosexuality, Sergent examines initiation rites in a wide variety of ancient cultures, particularly in Crete and among a group of Germanic peoples. In these two cultures, a sexually active adult, the erastes, was the mentor/suitor of an adolescent boy, the eromenos. The boy was ritualistically kidnapped and then lived in the wild for a prescribed period, during which time the erastes taught him to hunt and slept with him. Killing a boar or bear - the final trial - qualified the eromenos as a hunter and signified his ascent to adult status. To illustrate his compelling thesis, Sergent provides an exhaustive survey of the Greek myths, demonstrating that the homosexual relationships of male gods and heroes follow a similar pattern of ritual initiation.

This volume is the first comprehensive commentary on the seventh book of Martial's epigrams. The introduction discusses the date of publication of Martial’s books, the themes of the epigrams of book seven as well as the transmission of the text. The autor pays special attention to the adulation of Domitian in book seven, the satirization of lawyers, legacy-hunters, parasites and dinner-guests, and hetero- and homosexuality. The commentary, preceded by a revised edition of Shackleton Bailey’s Teubner edition (1990), focuses on literary, linguistic and metrical matters. Thematic relationships with other books of Martial and other Greek and Latin literature are highlighted. Attention is also paid to the use of recurrent motifs, obscene language, puns, double meanings and proper names.
