This book breaks new ground in considering the nature and function of anthologies of poetry and short stories in twentieth-century Portugal. It tackles the main theoretical issues, identifies a significant body of critical writing on the relationship between anthologies, literary history and the canon, and proposes an approach that might be designated Descriptive Anthology Studies. The author aims to achieve a full understanding of the role of anthologies in the literary polysystem. Moreover, this study considers anthologies published in Portugal in the early years of the twentieth-century, the influential figures who made them, the works they selected, and who read them. It also focuses on the principal publishing houses of the 1940s and 50s, and how their literary directors shaped public taste and promoted intercultural transfer. The author reveals tensions between conservative, nostalgic anthologies that promote an idyllic vision of rural Portugal, and collections of poems that question and challenge the status quo, whether in respect of the colonial wars or repressed female sexuality. The last part of the book explores anthology production in the period following the Revolution of 1974, observing the co-existence of traditional anthologising activity with new trends and innovations, and noting the role of women, both as anthologists and anthology items.

The Object of the Atlantic is a wide-ranging study of the transition from a concern with sovereignty to a concern with things in Iberian Atlantic literature and art produced between 1868 and 1968. Rachel Price uncovers the surprising ways that concrete aesthetics from Cuba, Brazil, and Spain drew not only on global forms of constructivism but also on a history of empire, slavery, and media technologies from the Atlantic world. Analyzing Jose Marti’s notebooks, Joaquim de Sousandrade’s poetry, Ramiro de Maeztu’s essays on things and on slavery, 1920s Cuban literature on economic restructuring, Ferreira Gullar’s theory of the “non-object,” and neoconcrete art, Price shows that the turn to objects—and from these to new media networks—was rooted in the very philosophies of history that helped form the Atlantic world itself.

Não cabe aqui uma valorização da contribuição analítica deste trabalho, pois já foi feita várias vezes e é hoje uma referência indispensável nos estudos de Drummond. Na época, no entanto, era também uma provocação metodológica, pois pela primeira vez Gilberto formulou suas premissas teóricas em contraste com as duas correntes predominantes na teoria da literatura, a corrente historicista de cunho marxista, por um lado, e a corrente estruturalista seguindo a ortodoxia francesa, articulada inicialmente por Levy-Strauss e aplicada na literatura por teóricos como Barthes, Kristeva e Todorov. Sem dúvida, Gilberto se encontrava mais próximo da segunda corrente que da primeira, mas sua leitura do estruturalismo era inspirada simultaneamente pelas questões propriamente poéticas que se encontravam mais bem articuladas na tradição estilística de Bally, Vosler e Spitzer. A abordagem inicial de Gilberto sistematizou a leitura da poesia de Drummond em torno do recurso de repetição nos diferentes níveis da linguagem e ofereceu assim um fundamento analítico para situar Drummond em relação ao modernismo, pelas repetições binárias, por exemplo, e ao mesmo tempo distinguir sua poesia pela singularidade expressiva, por exemplo, das repetições ternárias. Para Gilberto a estilística ofereceu assim uma ferramenta para desvendar a "luta contínua para exprimir mais e mais, sendo que a repetição parece ter origem nessa ânsia de superação do indizível" como conclui a análise de Drummond.
