La obra, abandonada desde entonces por m�, aparece ahora en una segunda edici�n, bastante corregida y aumentada con trozos de algunos autores m�s.Es �til la lectura de un autor antiguo, porque su pensamiento puede instruir y educar el nuestro; mas, para que esto tenga lugar, es preciso comprender sus ideas, no en lo que tienen de com�n a muchos tiempos, lugares y gentes, sino en aquello m�s escondido y particular propio de tal �poca, tal regi�n o tal persona, que, comparado con lo que tenemos delante y habitualmente nos rodea, nos ayuda a apreciar mejor lo que esto tiene de bueno o de malo, de pasajero o de permanente, dando seguridad y madurez a nuestro juicio. Por esto el comentario del autor antiguo se debe fijar en lo que la obra comentada difiere m�s de lo actual, en lo que tiene de m�s peculiar, por menudo que pa[p. 2]rezca; pues s�lo conseguimos comprender bien el pensamiento de un autor cuando llegamos a entender el sentido especial con que �l escribi� cada palabra, represent�ndonos en nuestra imaginaci�n lo mismo que �l en la suya ten�a presente al escribir; en suma, cuando reconstru�mos en nuestro entendimiento las menores circunstancias particulares del tiempo y lugar en que fu� escrita la obra, cuando llegamos a despertar en nosotros la impresi�n que los pormenores y el conjunto de la misma hicieron en los contempor�neos del autor cuando la le�an.

This accounts for many inserted names and phrases, and some paragraphs. Second, the translator has rewritten and added with some freedom.
