This manual is intended to fill a gap in the area of Romance studies. There is no introduction available so far that broadly covers the field of Catalan linguistics, neither in Catalan nor in any other language. The work deals with the language spoken in Catalonia and Andorra, the Balearic Islands, the region of Valencia, Northern Catalonia and the town of l'Alguer in Sardinia. Besides introducing the ideologies of language and nation and the history of Catalan linguistics, the manual is divided into separate parts embracing the description – grammar, lexicon, variation and varieties – and the history of the language since the early medieval period to the present day. It also covers its current social and political situation in the new local and global contexts. The main emphasis is placed on modern Catalan. L’estudi filologicohistòric que ara presentam es refereix al manuscrit Vertaderas traçes del Art de picapadrer, del mestre d’obres Josep Gelabert, natural de Mallorca, i és datat el 7 de maig de 1653, quan l’autor tenia només trenta-un anys d’edat. Es tracta del manuscrit d’estereotomia més antic escrit en llengua catalana. L’obra conté cent trenta-sis traces amb l’explicació corresponent i s’organitza en dues parts. La primera part inclou cinquanta-dues traces i hi trobam: una escairia, diverses figures en què es presenten diferents tipus de representacions geomètriques, arcs, pilars, portals, finestres, calderes, caragols, ons, voltes, girants de claustre, bombarderes i colls de pou. La segona part conté la resta de traces (de la 53 fins a la 136) «ab la qual sa demòstran las trases biaxes y de major mestransa», on trobam: arcs, portals, revolts, petxines, finestres, bombarderes, escales, naies, voltes, cimboris, capelles, caps d’església, un tercerol, el mode de trobar tres punts amb un redó, el mode de trobar el punt de qualsevol cintell, el mode d’encollir una cornisa i el mode de traçar una cornisa per un rost. El manuscrit del mestre d’obres Josep Gelabert comença amb un pròleg de l’autor i una còpia de les setanta-tres Consuetuds o Ordinacions d’en Santacília, sobre les servituds de les cases i honors que s’aplicaven a Barcelona en el segle XIV.
