Antonia Mercé, stage-named La Argentina, was the most celebrated Spanish dancer of the early 20th century. Her intensive musical and theatrical collaborations with members of the Spanish vanguard -- Manuel de Falla, Frederico García Lorca, Enrique Granados, Néstor de la Torre, Joaquín Nín, and with renowned Andalusian Gypsy dancers -- reflect her importance as an artistic symbol for contemporary Spain and its cultural history. When she died in 1936, newspapers around the world mourned the passing of the "Flamenco Pavlova."

Dos apodos apenas separados por un diminutivo deslumbran en el planeta de la danza española durante la primera mitad del siglo XX. Uno de ellos, la Argentinita, evoca pasiones lorquianas y dramas taurinos aún no olvidados. El otro, la Argentina, pertenece a una mujer hoy menos célebre que entregó su cuerpo al demonio de las tablas para convertirse en la bailarina (o bailaora) española más sofisticada e influyente de su tiempo. Y la disyunción (o la ambigüedad) es aquí pertinente porque Antonia Mercé sacó el baile flamenco de los ambientes tabernarios donde ella misma se había cepillado su impecable clasicismo y lo dotó de los atributos estéticos que necesitaba para elevarse a las más altas cumbres escénicas sin renunciar por ello a la vieja savia gitana. Por otro lado, la fructífera interacción de la Argentina con músicos como Manuel de Falla, escenógrafos como Néstor de la Torre o bailarines míticos como Vicente Escudero la sitúan en una encrucijada decisiva dentro de la cultura española contemporánea. Cuando murió (el 18 de julio de 1936, nada menos), la prensa de medio mundo describió a Antonia Mercé con una frase perfectamente estereotipada y, sin embargo, no del todo imprecisa: había sido la Pavlova del flamenco.
