Como fruto de um ethos colaborativo entre pesquisadores de diferentes gerações, destaca-se a ampla e diversificada literatura acadêmica produzida sobre o povo indígena Xavante. Porém, a grande maioria desses trabalhos está publicada em línguas que não o português, inclusive vários de autoria de pesquisadores brasileiros. Poucos são os trabalhos publicados originalmente em outras línguas que foram disponibilizados em português. Essa coletânea inclui uma seleção de textos sobre os Xavante, originalmente publicados em inglês de autoria de antropólogos e historiadores. Essa seleção vem preencher lacunas na literatura, existentes entre algumas monografias que consideramos clássicas e outros importantes artigos e capítulos já traduzidos para o português. Espera-se que o presente volume facilite, em particular, os estudantes Xavante, cada vez mais interessados em ler e conhecer o que a academia tem escrito sobre sua cultura e sociedade, muitas vezes publicado de maneira dispersa em revistas cientificas especializadas e de difícil acesso. Também deseja-se que esta coletânea estimule a pesquisa por parte de estudantes brasileiros em geral por conter, em um só volume, uma diversificada seleção de textos que abrange temas e aspectos da sociedade Xavante. Contudo, é importante enfatizar que este livro não se sustenta sozinho, ou seja, apenas complementa um conjunto de textos monográficos produzidos em épocas diferentes e com distintas abordagens, e que já estão disponíveis em português.

Contatando "brancos" e demarcando terras apresenta um repertório de narrativas obtidas em entrevistas com velhos indígenas das terras Parabubure e São Marcos sobre os primeiros contatos estabelecidos pelos Xavante com os "brancos", entre as décadas de 1940 e 1950, e sobre os processos históricos que culminaram nas demarcações dessas terras pelo Estado brasileiro, na década de 1970. Por meio da história oral, foram produzidas as entrevistas e obtidas as narrativas que formam o corpus do trabalho, cujas condições de produção são, ao longo desta obra, rigorosamente descritas. Partindo de uma problematização da colonialidade do saber presente na historiografia brasileira, a autora demonstra a importância das histórias e das memórias dos povos indígenas e promove o questionamento da tutela jurídica e das práticas de disciplinarização aplicadas por agentes do Estado brasileiro e pelos missionários às comunidades nativas. À luz de estudos históricos, etnográficos e antropológicos, são discutidas as representações dos Xavante sobre os "brancos", sobre suas mercadorias e doenças e sobre os conflitos interétnicos e intracomunitários experimentados pelos indígenas no período que precedeu e que sucedeu seus primeiros contatos. Também são abordadas as principais migrações vivenciadas pelos Xavante em sua história: a que os levou, no século XIX, a abandonarem as terras de Goiás e se estabelecerem no leste do Mato Grosso, e aquela que os fez deixar a região de Parabubure em direção à Missão Salesiana de Meruri, na década de 1950. As narrativas sobre as lutas empreendidas pelos Xavante, na década de 1970, em torno da demarcação de suas terras, são também analisadas e compreendidas como o resultado de transformações históricas vividas pelas comunidades indígenas no decorrer de décadas de contato interétnico, marcado por conflitos e negociações com os "brancos". Em diálogo com estudos pós-coloniais e decoloniais, o que se pretende, com esta obra, é contribuir para a construção de uma "história dissidente", divergente dos modelos hegemônicos e eurocêntricos que, por muito tempo, predominaram na historiografia produzida sobre os povos indígenas, corroborando com o seu silenciamento.

Na esteira de teorizações que buscam produzir um alargamento do campo pedagógico, entendendo que os processos culturais constituem também nossas maneiras de ser e de pensar, educando nosso olhar e compondo nossos repertórios representacionais, a presente dissertação dedica-se à análise de um evento contemporâneo, qual seja, os Jogos dos Povos Indígenas. O argumento central deste estudo, vinculado ao seu objetivo, salienta que este é um espaço híbrido, no qual se entrelaçam práticas provenientes de culturas e tradições diversas e no qual se constituem múltiplas representações sobre os povos indígenas. No livro, indaga-se particularmente sobre as mesclas e hibridações que podem ser observadas nesse território de práticas culturais, bem como sobre os significados produzidos quando os termos "indígena" e "jogo" são postos em relação. As análises permitiram identificar pedagogias culturais exercidas nas formas de divulgação e de realização deste evento, marcando-o pela sua positividade e colocando em destaque uma variedade de maneiras de ser e de pensar o jogo e o esporte por diferentes etnias indígenas. O caráter intercultural do evento se destaca nas negociações sobre modalidades esportivas, sobre os sentidos do "ser índio" e sobre temas que se vinculam ao evento em cada edição. Focusing on the Bororo people of west-central Brazil, this book addresses the construction of self-identity through interethnic interaction. By presenting the images the Bororo have of themselves as well as the images of others who have interacted with them, Brazilian anthropologist Sylvia Caiuby Novaes argues convincingly that Bororo self-images are constructed with the aid of a peculiar looking-glass—it is in the images of others that they see themselves.
