The discovery of the New World offered European civilisation the chance to generate a process of circulation of its own cultural values – the “spiritual conquest” – that has no comparable precedents. The missionary orders played an important role during this “Westernisation of the world,” not only as key players in the spread of Christian values, but also as mediators between different worlds. Indeed, missionary practices imposed the dominating culture’s values and institutions on the vanquished peoples. At the same time, they also promoted the circulation of new knowledge and the negotiation between different cultures during the age of a global integration of space. This book looks at the vast field of study concerning the history of missions from a specific viewpoint. Firstly, it focuses on “local” processes, singling out specific case studies to be used for a general reflection. On the other hand, it refocuses the attention on the Indigenous cultures – which the missionaries helped to bring to light in the field of Western history – showing how they succeeded in entering the areas of negotiation created by missionaries, and in producing their own cultural subjectivity.

Estetica antropologica è una nozione introdotta negli anni Sessanta del Novecento da Rolando Toro Araneda, psicologo e antropologo cileno, noto per avere ideato il Sistema Biodanza. Con questa idea il suo obiettivo era riscattare la parte luminosa dell’essere umano celata da un incessante lavorio culturale volto a valorizzare invece l’ombra, le nostre miserie e piccoli egoismi. Mettere in luce la grandezza umana, le capacità affettive, etiche, creative e legate alla conservazione della vita insite nella specie, risulta una proposta destabilizzante perché contraria all’approccio schivo nei confronti di teorie generalizzanti che sembra aver contraddistinto almeno una parte della riflessione antropologica negli ultimi decenni. In questo testo, il recupero di questa nozione prende una valenza duplice: da una parte enunciare lo specifico progetto antropo-poietico di Toro, sorto in un contesto culturale cileno multidisciplinare, in cui psichiatri, artisti, antropologi e psicologi hanno stretto un’alleanza con l’idea comune di “umanizzare la medicina”, dall’altra, associandola alla proposta di Francesco Remotti attorno a un’antropologia inattuale (2014), quella di portare alla luce il valore dell’antropologia, anche negli aspetti oggi considerati inattuali, come il fare teoria oltre che solo etnografia, come scienza capace di parlare ai membri della propria comunità in merito a tematiche e preoccupazioni contemporanee, di prendersi carico dell’attualità, attraverso una pratica conoscitiva intrinsecamente etica.

Com este livro, o antropólogo britânico Alfred Gell tanto inova a leitura tradicional que a antropologia fez da chamada arte primitiva, como questiona a teoria da arte de um modo geral, ao adotar como eixo de seu argumento o conceito de agência. O autor defende que a obra de arte, produzida por indivíduos ou coletivamente, é dotada de intencionalidade, isto é, sua existência influencia os pensamentos e as ações de seu público. Criticando as teorias antropológicas e estéticas existentes que assumem um ponto de vista passivo, e questionando o critério que delega o status de arte somente a uma determinada classe de objetos e não a outras, Gell reformula a antropologia da arte como uma teoria da ação: objetos artísticos, carregados de intencionalidades, são agentes de relações sociais. Sua teoria lança mão, ainda, da noção de "objeto distribuído" da antropologia melanésia, de conceitos da psicologia dos padrões e das percepções e da semiótica, tomando exemplos provenientes de todo o mundo, desde a arte europeia (de Leonardo da Vinci a Duchamp), passando pela Índia, África, e em especial a Polinésia e a Melanésia, onde realizou seu trabalho de campo.
