Urban Art And The City written by Argyro Loukaki and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-04 with Art, Municipal categories.

This book offers original interdisciplinary insights into cities as a diachronic creation of urban art. It engages in a sequence of historical perspectives to examine urban space as an object of apparent quasi-cycles and processes of constitution, exaltation, imitation, contestation and redemption through art. Urban art transforms the city into a human-made sublime which is explored in the context of the Eastern Mediterranean. The book probes this process primarily through the example of Athens and Byzantine Constantinople, but also Jerusalem, Cyprus and regional cities, revealing how urban space unavoidably encompasses a spatial and temporal palimpsest which is constantly emerging. It presents new ideas for both the theorization and sensuous conception of artistic reality, architecture, and planning attributes. These extend from archaic, classical and Byzantine urban splendour to current urban decline as constitution and attack on the sublime and back. Urban processes of contestation and redemption respond recently to the new 'imperialism of debt' and the positivist, technocratic understandings and demands of Euro-governments and neoliberal institutions, while still evoking older forms of spatial power. Offering fresh notions on art, architecture, space, antiquity, (post)-modernity and politics of the region, this book will appeal to scholars and students of geography, urban studies, art, restoration, and film theory, architecture, landscape design, planning, anthropology, sociology and history.

"Byzantine art abandoned classical ideals in favor of formulas that conveyed spiritual concepts through stylized physical forms. Previous scholarship dealing with Byzantine icons has been largely focused on depictions of holy figures, dismissing representations of architecture as irrelevant space-filling background. Architecture as Icon demonstrates that background representations of architecture are meaningful, active components of compositions, often as significant as the holy figures. The book provides a critical view for understanding the Byzantine conception of architectural forms and space and the corresponding intellectual underpinnings of their representation." "Architecture as Icon features four thought-provoking essays. The catalogue groups the material into four categories: generic, specific, and symbolic representations, culminating in a final grouping entitled "Jerusalem." Handsomely designed and illustrated, this volume addresses various approaches to depicting architecture in Byzantine art that contrast sharply with those of the Renaissance and Western artistic tradition." --Book Jacket.

Although Francesco Petrarca (1304–74) is best known today for cementing the sonnet’s place in literary history, he was also a philosopher, historian, orator, and one of the foremost classical scholars of his age. Petrarch: A Critical Guide to the Complete Works is the only comprehensive, single-volume source to which anyone—scholar, student, or general reader—can turn for information on each of Petrarch’s works, its place in the poet’s oeuvre, and a critical exposition of its defining features. A sophisticated but accessible handbook that illuminates Petrarch’s love of classical culture, his devout Christianity, his public celebrity, and his struggle for inner peace, this encyclopedic volume covers both Petrarch’s Italian and Latin writings and the various genres in which he excelled: poem, tract, dialogue, oration, and letter. A biographical introduction and chronology anchor the book, making Petrarch an invaluable resource for specialists in Italian, comparative literature, history, classics, religious studies, the Middle Ages, and the Renaissance.

Call Light By: J.M. Frollo “What is the craziest thing that’s happened to you while working on an airplane?” is, hands down, the most popular question asked of flight attendants. Strange and entertaining scenarios are to be expected while millions of people fly through the sky or sit around waiting in airports each day, but the stories in Call Light bring to mind a couple of burning questions: What in the world happens to people when they pass through the sliding glass doors of an airport, and what is it about air travel that inhibits common sense, common courtesies, and basic problem-solving skills? We may never know why some passengers behave so outlandishly, but when they do, it’s only natural to laugh. From Mr. Fabulous’ awkward advances to Mr. Gray’s lavatory misadventures to the secondhand sandwich fiasco for The Couple in Row Five, Call Light is full of lighthearted and playful tales of life aboard an airliner. Told with wit and humility, these stories from an observant flight attendant feature a variety of lively personalities in colorful scenarios that share a positive message for any traveler: Be on the lookout for humor, and always choose kindness.

The Critical Heritage gathers together a large body of critical sources on major figures in literature. Each volume presents contemporary responses to a writer's work, enabling students and researchers to read for themselves, for example, comments on early performances of Shakespeare's plays, or reactions to the first publication of Jane Austen's novels. The carefully selected sources range from landmark essays in the history of criticism to journalism and contemporary opinion, and little published documentary material such as letters and diaries. Significant pieces of criticism from later periods are also included, in order to demonstrate the fluctuations in an author's reputation. Each volume contains an introduction to the writer's published works, a selected bibliography, and an index of works, authors and subjects. The Collected Critical Heritage set will be available as a set of 68 volumes and the series will also be available in mini sets selected by period (in slipcase boxes) and as individual volumes.

Pariah written by Bob Fingerman and has been published by Virus this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-10-26 with Fiction categories.

In a modest Manhattan walk-up, a group of survivors are on their last legs. As the end seems nigh, a teenage girl is spotted on the avenue, not only alive but repelling the undead like Moses parting the Red Sea. When she comes to their aid questions of who, what and why she’s immune to attack arise. Almost like a play, this single location-centric story features a strong cast of archetypal, yet fully fleshed-out, distinct, characters. The artist; the young widow; the elderly couple; the bros living a new normal, for one of whom it’s also finally living his truth; the country boy who’s turned his back on his faith only to have it return in earnest. And the mysterious stranger that arrives as their savior, only to confound them, even as she complies with their ever-increasing impositions. PARIAH sets the classic zombie tropes on their ear as the element of immunity to attack is introduced into the mix. Very contemporary, but also taking cues from the classic New York cinema of Martin Scorcese, Neil Simon, Woody Allen and other gritty cinema and literature, PARIAH thrusts the reader into a truly dire survivors’ tale, capturing the desperation and resolve of its disparate cast.
