The Apocrypha ("hidden things") is that collection of books included in the Greek Septuagint translation of the Hebrew Bible, or in the Latin Vulgate translation. While these books are not part of the Hebrew text that forms the canon for Judaism and Protestant Christianity, they are regarded as canonical by several Christian traditions. Additionally, scholars have pronounced the Apocrypha to be of great value in understanding the times between the Old and New Testaments and the place of Judaism in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. The deuterocanonical books consist of such genres as wisdom literature, historical stories, histories, devotional writings, letters, and even apocalyptic material. Included are 1 Esdras; 1 & 2 Maccabees; Tobit; Judith; Esther (Greek); Song of the Three Young Men; Susanna; Bel and the Dragon; Wisdom of Solomon; Wisdom of Jesus, Son of Sirach (Ecclesiasticus); Baruch; Letter of Jeremiah; Prayer of Manasseh; and 2 Esdras. The Apocrypha is used by the Anglican, Eastern Orthodox, Lutheran, Methodist, and Roman Catholic traditions. Featuring readable 9-point type, this affordable slim volume is a convenient supplement to Bibles that don't include the apocryphal texts; and is ideal for classroom use or personal study. It also includes an essay from John R. Kohlenberger III on the importance of the Apocrypha. Edited by David Norton, this important scholarly edition presents a revised KJV text based on a thorough evaluation of textual variants in current renderings as well as the extant notes of the 1611 Translators. The text itself is presented in paragraph form, with marginal notes, and adopts modern conventions of spelling and punctuation to make it easy to read and use. The New Cambridge Paragraph Bible was originally published in 2005 in a large format and, like the original King James Bible and successive editions until the nineteenth century, included the Apocrypha. As it has become known in the marketplace, a demand has become apparent for this Bible in a smaller, more manageable format. Its is therefore now being issued in Personal Size editions, either with or without the Apocrypha. This particular Bible includes the Apocrypha and comes in hardcover.

Despite the different opinions on the degree of authority that should be given to the books of the Apocrypha, most Christians agree that these books are valuable. Because these books were written in the intertestamental period, they provide helpful insight into Jewish history, beliefs, and religious practices immediately prior to the birth of Jesus. People who read them will be better able to understand the political, cultural, ethical, and religious context of the contemporaries of Jesus. This affordable paperback edition of the King James Version Apocrypha makes these books available in an easy-to-read format.

This edition...."follows the 1611 text page-for-page and line-for-line, reproducing all misprints rather than correcting them. The volume also reprints the large body of the preliminary matter, which includes genealogies, maps, and lists of readings, as well as the translator's preface to the reader. The text features an easy-to-read modern font instead of the black-letter type of the original, with exception of the original decorative letters and early page ornaments, which have been reproduced. The volume concludes with an essay by Renaissance studies expert, Gordon Campbell, on the first edition of the King James Bible."--Publisher's description.

A stunning work of scholarship, the Norton Critical Edition of The English Bible, King James Version, is the most accessible edition available. In celebration of the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible, these long-awaited volumes bring together succinct introductions to each biblical book, detailed explanatory annotations, and a wealth of contextual and critical materials. Archaic words are explained, textual problems are lucidly discussed, and stylistic features of the original texts are highlighted. For the New Testament and the Apocrypha, the introductions and annotations by Austin Busch and Gerald Hammond provide necessary historical and cultural background, while illuminating the complexity of the original texts. Supporting materials are divided into five sections. “Historical Contexts” excerpts Greek, Roman, and Jewish sources, such as Josephus, Philo, Tacitus, Pliny, and the Dead Sea Scrolls. Selections from Papias, Marcion, and Valentinus, among others, provide insight into the diversity of early Christianity. “Exegesis” explores classic New Testament commentary from Origen and Augustine to Strauss, Nietzsche, Wrede, and Schweitzer, who focus on the Gospels’ vexing relationship to history. Essays by contemporary scholars and critics complete the section by exemplifying a range of interdisciplinary approaches to New Testament literature. The New Testament’s powerful language and images have inspired some of the finest poems in the English language. This volume collects a wide selection of lyric poems, hymns and spirituals, and epics, from the Dream of the Rood to works by Countee Cullen, Elizabeth Bishop, and Anthony Hecht. Case studies designed to stimulate classroom discussion trace the development of Pontius Pilate as a character in post-biblical literature, follow the centuries-long exegetical debate about Romans 7, and survey competing hermeneutical approaches to Revelation. A final section samples fifteen translations of 1 Corinthians 13, from Wycliffe to contemporary versions.
