Questo libro rappresenta il quinto passo di un itinerario di ricerca unitario, cui sottostà la seguente tesi: che fin dall’antichità la rivelazione cristiana di Dio abbia suscitato l’esigenza di formulare una nuova ontologia e che ciò nonostante, sotto certi aspetti, siano occorsi quasi duemila anni affinché la filosofia elaborasse un bagaglio concettuale atto ad esprimere quella nuova ontologia ... In Gregorio è rilevabile un’ambivalenza di fondo: da un lato, egli è figlio del suo tempo ed utilizza vocaboli e concetti comuni alle scuole filosofiche del quarto secolo, in particolare, il termine usía e la certezza indubitabile nell’assoluta semplicità della sostanza divina; dall’altro, tuttavia, soprattutto nella sua teoria dei nomi e con la nozione di «infinità» di Dio, arriva implicitamente a mettere in discussione sia quel termine − usía, che è riconosciuta essere assolutamente incomprensibile ed indicibile − sia quella certezza − la semplicità dell’essere divino, che risulta originariamente molteplice. Dio non è usía, ma parusía: non essenza, ma presenza; conseguentemente, la conoscenza di Dio è possibile per contatto e non per concetto, esperienzialmente e non dottrinalmente; l’origine si rivela infine non semplice, bensì originariamente (s)composta, e l’essere è letteralmente inter-esse, limite, soglia di trapasso. Questi sono i risultati impliciti, esigenziali, della filosofia del Nisseno: risultati ai quali Gregorio è giunto perché a loro lo ha condotto la rivelazione cristiana di Dio; risultati nondimeno che nel Nisseno rimangono latenti, perché inconciliabili con la grammatica filosofica che egli condivideva con il suo tempo.
