In the late 1960s, the American city found itself in steep decline. An urban crisis fueled by federal policy wreaked destruction and displacement on poor and working-class families. The urban drama included religious institutions, themselves undergoing fundamental change, that debated whether to stay in the city or move to the suburbs. Against the backdrop of the Black and Brown Power movements, which challenged economic inequality and white supremacy, young Latino radicals began occupying churches and disrupting services to compel church communities to join their protests against urban renewal, poverty, police brutality, and racism. Apostles of Change tells the story of these occupations and establishes their context within the urban crisis; relates the tensions they created; and articulates the activists' bold, new vision for the church and the world. Through case studies from Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, and Houston, Felipe Hinojosa reveals how Latino freedom movements frequently crossed boundaries between faith and politics and argues that understanding the history of these radical politics is essential to understanding the dynamic changes in Latino religious groups from the late 1960s to the early 1980s.

We often think of the apostles as spiritual giants—men who were uniquely qualified to walk with Jesus and carry on His mission to the world. But the reality is they stand out more for their lack of qualifications. They were not trained religious scholars; they often misunderstood what Jesus told them; and sometimes they simply failed to live up to Jesus’s expectations. Not only did they lack qualifications, but they also encountered many of the same fears and issues we experience. They struggled with doubts, cowardice, ambition, faithlessness, pessimism, and greed. In other words, the apostles were people just like us. Yet, Jesus chose them to change the world. And they did. Lessons from the Apostles describes the struggles and personalities of these ordinary men, reveals the transformation Jesus made in their lives, and identifies specific lessons you can apply in your own life. You will also find brief accounts of the stories and legends regarding what happened to the apostles after the Bible. As you read about each of these men, you will likely recognize your own personality in one or more of them. And you will find encouragement from knowing that you too are the type of person God can use to change the world

Most Christians associate the word "apostle" with the leaders of early Christianity. But few realize there is far more to its meaning and origins. In "Who Are the Apostles?," author Rev. Dr. Robert Scudieri offers a rich history of the term, from its original Greek concept, to the office among the Jewish people, and to the profound changes to the idea made by Jesus himself. This remarkable book then traces the lives of Jesus's twelve apostles, where they traveled, which countries they evangelized, and where they planted new churches. He examines the various traits that made them uniquely suited for their work and compares those qualities to today's missionaries-especially the missionaries to America -and the unique calling they have to reach every ethnic group. In the vein of "Augustus to Constantine" by Robert M. Grant, "The Apostolic Imperative" by Carl E. Braaten, and "Evangelism in the Early Church" by Michael Green, this extraordinary resource seeks to not only honor the Christian missionaries both past and present, but also to reach out to those who might be unfamiliar with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

You don't have to be perfect to do God's work. Look no further than the twelve disciples, whose many weaknesses are forever preserved throughout the pages of the New Testament. Join bestselling author John MacArthur in Twelve Ordinary Men as he draws principles from Christ's careful, hands-on training of the original disciples for today's modern disciple, you! Jesus chose ordinary men--fishermen, tax collectors, political zealots--and turned their weakness into strength, producing greatness from people who were otherwise unremarkable. The twelve disciples weren't the stained-glass saints we imagine. On the contrary, they were truly human, all too prone to mistakes, misstatements, wrong attitudes, lapses of faith, and bitter failure. Simply put, they were flawed people, just like us. But under Jesus' teaching and touch, they became a force that forever changed the world. MacArthur takes you into the inner circle of the disciples--their selection, their training, their personalities, and their incredible impact. As MacArthur took a closer look at the lives of the twelve disciples, he found himself asking difficult questions along the way, including: Why did Jesus pick each of the twelve disciples? How did Jesus teach them everything he could in just eighteen short months? Can the lessons that Jesus taught the disciples can still influence our faith today? In Twelve Ordinary Men, you'll learn that disciples are living proof that God's strength is made perfect in weakness. As you get to know the men who walked with Jesus, you'll see that if he can accomplish his purposes through them, he can do the same through you.

Transforming Acts written by Bruce G. Epperly and has been published by Energion Publications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-07-30 with Religion categories.

In Healing Marks (Energion Publications, 2012), Dr. Bruce Epperly challenged Christians to take the healings of Jesus seriously as a pattern for how we can become healing communities. Now he turns to the book of Acts as a pattern for the church in the 21st century. He says, “I believe that Acts of the Apostles provides a fluid, open-spirited, and holistic faith for twenty-first century people as well as a vision for congregational transformation and renewal. Anything can happen to those who follow Jesus. Life is adventurous, surprising, and interesting. Worship leads to mission and mission challenges narrow-mindedness and self-imposed limitations. For those who embrace the spirit of Acts of the Apostles, worship will never be boring and every day will be a holy adventure.” This book is not just an exposition of the book of Acts. It is a call to action. But it is more than that. It draws from the lessons of the early church a plan of individual and communal action to live an adventurous life of faith and to change the world. Each chapter includes activities to help you apply the content to your life and mission. Labeled “Transforming Acts” these point to the transforming acts you can take in your personal or congregational life . Acts is a story of a small group of people who set out to do what appeared humanly impossible – change their world. In this book you are invited to become a part of that story, to attempt the humanly impossible, and to bring transformation and renewal to the church and to the entire world.
