The Apple / / series of computers represents one of the most versatile and powerful home computers available. If you've used your computer for a while, you've probably become quite familiar with Applesoft BASIC. That's good, because once you know that, this book will show you how to graduate from BASIC programming to assembly language programming. There are many reasons to program your Apple in assembly language. First and foremost is speed. Assembly language is about 100 times faster than BASIC. If you're thinking of writing games or business programs that do sorting, speed is of the essence and assembly language is a must. Assembly language programs usually also require less memory. Thus you can squeeze more complex programs into a smaller amount of memory. Finally, assembly language programs offer you a considerable amount of security, because they are more difficult to trace and change. While assembly language is powerful, it doesn't have to be difficult to learn. In fact, if you can write programs in Applesoft BASIC, you're already half-way home. This book assumes you know BASIC and absolutely nothing about assembly language or machine language. Every effort has been made to write in nontechnical language and to set the chapters out in a logical manner, introducing new concepts in digestible pieces as and when they are needed, rather than devoting whole chapters to specific items.

Modern Instructions for 64-Bit ARM CPUs Building on Randall Hyde’s iconic series, The Art of ARM Assembly delves into programming 64-bit ARM CPUs—the powerhouses behind iPhones, Macs, Chromebooks, servers, and embedded systems. Following a fast-paced introduction to the art of programming in assembly and the GNU Assembler (Gas) specifically, you’ll explore memory organization, data representation, and the basic logical operations you can perform on simple data types. You’ll learn how to define constants, write functions, manage local variables, and pass parameters efficiently. You’ll explore both basic and advanced arithmetic operations, control structures, numeric conversions, lookup tables, and string manipulation—in short, you’ll cover it all. You’ll also dive into ARM SIMD (Neon) instructions, bit manipulation, and macro programming with the Gas assembler, as well as how to: Declare pointers and use composite data structures like strings, arrays, and unions Convert simple and complex arithmetic expressions into machine instruction sequences Use ARM addressing modes and expressions to access memory variables Create and use string library functions and build libraries of assembly code using makefiles This hands-on guide will help you master ARM assembly while revealing the intricacies of modern machine architecture. You’ll learn to write more efficient high-level code and gain a deeper understanding of software-hardware interactions—essential skills for any programmer working with ARM-based systems.

Modern Assembly Language Programming with the ARM Processor, Second Edition is a tutorial-based book on assembly language programming using the ARM processor. It presents the concepts of assembly language programming in different ways, slowly building from simple examples towards complex programming on bare-metal embedded systems. The ARM processor was chosen as it has fewer instructions and irregular addressing rules to learn than most other architectures, allowing more time to spend on teaching assembly language programming concepts and good programming practice. Careful consideration is given to topics that students struggle to grasp, such as registers vs. memory and the relationship between pointers and addresses, recursion, and non-integral binary mathematics. A whole chapter is dedicated to structured programming principles. Concepts are illustrated and reinforced with many tested and debugged assembly and C source listings. The book also covers advanced topics such as fixed- and floating-point mathematics, optimization, and the ARM VFP and NEONTM extensions. - Includes concepts that are illustrated and reinforced with a large number of tested and debugged assembly and C source listing - Intended for use on very low-cost platforms, such as the Raspberry Pi or pcDuino, but with the support of a full Linux operating system and development tools - Includes discussions of advanced topics, such as fixed and floating point mathematics, optimization, and the ARM VFP and NEON extensions - Explores ethical issues involving safety-critical applications - Features updated content, including a new chapter on the Thumb instruction set

Now, for the first time, all thirty-three articles are available in one complete volume. This edition also contains all of the appendices from the original book as well as new appendices on the 65C02, zero-page memory usage, and a beginner's guide to using the Merlin Assembler. The book is designed for students of all ages: the nostalgic programmer enjoying the retro revolution, the newcomer interested in learning low-level assembly coding, or the embedded systems developer using the latest 65C02 chips from Western Design Center. "Roger Wagner didn't just read the first book on programming the Apple computer-he wrote it." - Steve Wozniak
