Sound earthing & grounding of the electrical installation is the fundamental requirement for safe and reliable operation. There is a lot of misconception among practicing engineers (both design and field) on this topic. Study of this application guide will bring clarity to the reader on this topic. Earthing methods for different applications like EHV Switchyard, MV and LV systems and earthing application to special areas like Solar farms, GIS terminations, C&I (Control & Instrumentation) systems in power and industrial plants are covered. Remarks on mis-interpretation of IE rules are made. The reader will understand why different grounding methods are adopted at different voltage levels. Relationship between Grounding and Transformer Ampere Turns Balance theory is clearly brought out which is the cornerstone of grounding exercise. Features of ungrounded and grounded systems are covered in detail including demystification of zig zag connection. Ready to use spread sheets for sizing of NGT/NGR are given. Supported by copious illustrations from field experience, fundamental concepts of grounding are explained by solving problems of gradually increasing complexity. Various practices adopted for Neutral grounding of generator are described. Students will tremendously benefit by studying this guide as it combines theory with lot of practical examples. He/She will acquire the necessary skills upfront needed by industry. The design engineer or consultants will find the guide very useful to perform optimum design. Origin of many nuisance tripping or power quality issues is poor earthing/grounding. The practicing and field engineers will be able to address many of the problems encountered at site due to faulty earthing and grounding.

Practical Guide to International Standardization for Electrical Engineering provides a comprehensive guide to the purpose of standards organizations, their relationship to product development and how to use the standardization process for cost-effective new product launch. It covers major standardization organizations in the field of Electrical Engineering offering a general overview of the varying structures of national standardization organizations, their goals and targets. Key questions for standardization are answered giving the reader guidance on how to use national and international standards in the electrical business. When shall the company start to enter standardization? How to evaluate the standardization in relationship to the market success? What are the interactions of innovations and market access? What is the cost of standardization? What are the gains for our experts in standardization? Key features: Provides guidance on how to use national and international standards in the electrical business. Global active standardization bodies featured include IEEE, IEC and CIGRE as well as regional organizations like CENELEC for Europe, SAC for China, DKE for Germany, and ANSI for USA. Case studies demonstrate how standardization affects the business and how it may block or open markets. Explains the multiple connections and influences between the different standardization organizations on international, regional or national levels and regulatory impact to the standardization processes. Two detailed focused case studies, one on Smart Grid and one on Electro-Mobility, show the influence and the work of international standardization. The case studies explain how innovative technical developments are promoted by standards and what are the roles of standardization organizations are. A valuable reference for electrical engineers, designers, developers, test engineers, sales engineers, marketing engineers and users of electrical equipment as well as authorities and business planners to use and work with standards.

Abstract- Low voltage generators are solidly grounded or low resistance grounded, whereas HV generators are high resistance grounded, connected to earth via neutral grounding transformer to limit the stator earth fault current within 5 to 10 Amp. When single-phase earth fault occurs close to the generator neutral, the driving voltage will be low, and hence the value of fault current will also be extremely less. For faults in the last 5% of the winding from star point, the earth fault current is too low that it cannot be detected by protective relay and hence it is very difficult to detect stator earth fault through current based protection. Therefore single-phase earth fault of stator winding can be protected by using voltage-based protections either using Residual over voltage or Neutral voltage displacement protection function. There are different philosophies used for detecting earth fault in stator winding. In this paper we are showing earth fault setting calculation and its interlock.
