Proton Transfer Reaction Mass Spectrometry (PTR-MS) is a rapidly growing analytical technique for detecting and identifying very small quantities of chemical compounds in air. It has seen widespread use in atmospheric monitoring and food science and shows increasing promise in applications such as industrial process monitoring, medical science and in crime and security scenarios. Written by leading researchers, this is the first book devoted to PTR-MS and it provides a comprehensive account of the basic principles, the experimental technique and various applications, thus making this book essential reading for researchers, technicians, postgraduate students and professionals in industry. The book contains nine chapters and is divided into two parts. The first part describes the underlying principles of the PTR-MS technique, including • the relevant ion-molecule chemistry • thermodynamics and reaction kinetics • a discussion of ion sources, drift tubes and mass spectrometers • practical aspects of PTR-MS, including calibration. The second part of the book turns its attention to some of the many applications of PTR-MS, demonstrating the scope and benefits, as well as the limitations, of the technique. The chapters that make up the second part of the book build upon the material presented in the first part and are essentially self-contained reviews focusing on the following topics: • environmental science • food science • medicine • homeland security, and • applications of PTR-MS in liquid analysis.

Advanced Mass Spectrometry: Applications in Organic and Analytical Chemistry discusses the concepts that are essential in the effective utilization of mass spectrometry. The title particularly covers the fundamentals of the modern techniques, along with the technological concerns of mass spectrometry. The opening chapter of the selection introduces mass spectrometry, while the subsequent chapters cover the fundamentals and hardware. The next chapters talk about the analytical chemistry consequences and the ion-genetic relationships. The remaining chapter covers the application of mass spectrometry, which includes structural, mechanistic, chemical, and biochemical applications. The book will be of great use to organic and analytical chemists. Chemists from other branch of chemistry, along with practitioners of related fields such as chemical engineering will also benefit from the text.

This thesis reports the use of Proton Transfer Reaction-Mass Spectrometry (PTR-MS) in the health sciences. Here we provide the details on volatiles emitted from the shisha paste and when shisha paste undergoes combustion follows on from this, the analyses of which are aided by GC-MS (Gas Chromothography-Mass Spectrometry) measurements. This work presents the first PTR-MS study of shisha smoking, a poster for which won the best poster award at the Breath Research Conference in Zürich 2016. Presented first is a preinvestigation of two key compounds, menthol and vanillin, expected in some shisha pastes to determine the product ions together with related compounds that have differences in their functional groups. Details on the reactions of H3O+ with several fluorinated anaesthetics are presented, with the objective to provide details on which product ions should be monitored in a planned study of washout characteristics of anaesthetics following surgery. Breath washout characteristics for volatiles present in the blood following the ingestion of a peppermint oil capsule are presented, being part of a much larger European study dealing with breath standardisation. Here we present details on intra- and inter- individuals variability. The final results chapter looks at volatiles in breath samples of young men who have undergone a head trauma.

The only comprehensive guide to CIMS applications in structural elucidation and analytical studies Chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometry, 2nd Edition, provides a comprehensive, up-to-date review of CIMS applications in structural elucidation and quantitative analytical studies. For the benefit of readers without a background in gaseous ion chemistry, a thorough review is presented in Chapter 2. Other chapters discuss such topics as reagent ion systems within the context of the thermochemistry and kinetics of the ionization process, including reactions and the type of information obtained; isotopic exchange reactions; stereochemical effects in chemical ionization; and reactive ion/molecule collisions in quadrupole cells. Chemical ionization mass spectra of 13 classes of compounds are discussed in detail to illustrate the influence of different functional groups on the spectra observed. Chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometry, 2nd Edition will be a valuable reference for anyone interested in mass spectrometry and gaseous ion chemistry in general.
