The objective of this project is to apply Vehicle Routing heuristics to the distribution of parts and assemblies between facilities at an aircraft manufacturing company. The problem is models as a Vehicle Routing Problem with multiple trips, time windows, backhauls, pickups and deliveries, and simultaneous pickups and deliveries with multiple weighted objectives including the minimization of total driving time, overtime, time windows deviations, resource requirements, and to balance the vehicle tours. A framework is established that breaks the problem down into four distinct parts: the construction of initial routs using a savings based heuristic, the assignment of the routs to vehicles with a bin packing heuristic, the improvement of the routes' positions within and between vehicles using a tabu search, and the improvement of the service requests' positions within and between routes using a second tabu search. The framework was applied to a real world problem and multiple instances were created to mimic varying real world situations. This framework proved to be robust and effective at solving the test instances and outperformed manual schedules and comparative heuristics by a wide margin. - Abstract.

This book deals with complex variants of Travelling Salesman Problem (TSP) and Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) within the manufacturing and service industries. The objective is to develop heuristics for these supply chain problems in order to offer practical solutions to improve operational efficiency. These heuristics are evaluated using benchmark and derived data-sets. Case studies pertaining to logistics in different industries including textile machinery manufacturing and banking are also included to demonstrate the created heuristics. High competition in today’s global market has forced the organizations to invest in and focus on their logistics system. The critical function of logistics is the transportation within and across various supply chain entities. Both supply and distribution procedure require effective transportation management. A small improvement in routing problems can lead to huge logistics savings in absolute terms. This book should appeal to executives, researchers and consultants seeking supply chain management solutions.

This book is dedicated to metaheuristics as applied to vehicle routing problems. Several implementations are given as illustrative examples, along with applications to several typical vehicle routing problems. As a first step, a general presentation intends to make the reader more familiar with the related field of logistics and combinatorial optimization. This preamble is completed with a description of significant heuristic methods classically used to provide feasible solutions quickly, and local improvement moves widely used to search for enhanced solutions. The overview of these fundamentals allows appreciating the core of the work devoted to an analysis of metaheuristic methods for vehicle routing problems. Those methods are exposed according to their feature of working either on a sequence of single solutions, or on a set of solutions, or even by hybridizing metaheuristic approaches with others kind of methods.

Vehicle routing problems, among the most studied in combinatorial optimization, arise in many practical contexts (freight distribution and collection, transportation, garbage collection, newspaper delivery, etc.). Operations researchers have made significant developments in the algorithms for their solution, and Vehicle Routing: Problems, Methods, and Applications, Second Edition reflects these advances. The text of the new edition is either completely new or significantly revised and provides extensive and complete state-of-the-art coverage of vehicle routing by those who have done most of the innovative research in the area; it emphasizes methodology related to specific classes of vehicle routing problems and, since vehicle routing is used as a benchmark for all new solution techniques, contains a complete overview of current solutions to combinatorial optimization problems. It also includes several chapters on important and emerging applications, such as disaster relief and green vehicle routing.

This book presents state-of-the-art research and practice in optimization routing, specifically the vehicle routing problem (VRP). Since its introduction in the late 1950s, the VRP has been a very significant area of research and practice in operations research. Vehicles are used to make deliveries and for pick-ups every day and everywhere. Companies such as Amazon, UPS, FedEx, and DHL use route optimization to reduce mileage, fuel use, number of trucks on the road, and carbon dioxide emissions. The authors compile and analyze 135 survey and review articles on vehicle routing topics published between 2005 and 2022 in an effort to make key observations about publication and trend history, summarize the overall contributions in the field, and identify trends in VRP research and practice. The authors have compiled published research on models, algorithms, and applications for specific areas, including: alternative and multiple objectives; arc routing and general routing; drones, last-mile delivery, and urban distribution; dynamic and stochastic routing; green routing; inventory routing; loading constraints; location-routing; multiple depots; pickup and delivery and dial-a-ride problems; rich and multi-attribute routing; routing over time; shipping; two-echelon, collaborative, and inter-terminal problems; specific variants, benchmark datasets, and software; and exact algorithms and heuristics. In addition, the book discusses how vehicle routing problems are among the most widely studied problems in combinatorial optimization due to the mathematical complexity and practical significance.

The Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) and its numerous variants are amongst the most widelystudied in the entire Operations Research literature, with applications in fields includ-ing supply chain management, journey planning and vehicle scheduling. In this thesis,we focus on three problems from two fields with a wide reach; the design of public trans-port systems and the robust routing of delivery vehicles. Each chapter investigates a newsetting, formulates an optimization problem, introduces various solution methods andpresents computational experiments highlighting salient points. The first problem involves commuters who use a flexible shuttle service to travel to a maintransit hub, where they catch a fixed route public transport service to their true destina-tion. In our variant, passengers must forgo some of the choices they had in previous ver-sions; the service provider chooses the specific hub passengers are taken to (provided allrelevant timing constraints are satisfied). This introduces both complexities and opportu-nities not seen in other VRP variants, so we present two solution methods tailored for thisproblem. An extensive computational study over a range of networks shows this flexibilityallows significant cost savings with little impact on the quality of service received. The second problem involves dynamic ridesharing schemes and one of their most per-sistent drawbacks: the requirement to attract a large number of users during the start upphase. Although this is influenced by many factors, a significant consideration is the per-ceived uncertainty around finding a match. To address this, the service provider may wishto employ a small number of their own private drivers, to serve riders who would oth-erwise remain unmatched. We explore how this could be formulated as an optimizationproblem and discuss the objectives and constraints the service provider may have. Wethen describe a special structure inherent to the problem and present three different so-lution methods which exploit this. Finally, a broad computational study demonstrates thepotential benefits of these dedicated drivers and identifies environments in which they aremost useful. The third problem comes from the field of logistics and involves a large delivery firmserving an uncertain customer set. The firm wishes to build low cost delivery routes thatremain efficient after the appearance and removal of some customers. We formulate thisproblem and present a heuristic which is both computationally cheaper and more versatilethan comparative exact methods. A wide computational study illustrates our heuristic'spredictive power and its efficacy compared to natural alternative strategies.

In many decision problems, e.g. from the area of production and logistics manage ment, the evaluation of alternatives and the determination of an optimal or at least suboptimal solution is an important but dif?cult task. For most such problems no ef?cient algorithm is known and classical approaches of Operations Research like Mixed Integer Linear Programming or Dynamic Pro gramming are often of limited use due to excessive computation time. Therefore, dedicated heuristic solution approaches have been developed which aim at providing good solutions in reasonable time for a given problem. However, such methods have two major drawbacks: First, they are tailored to a speci?c prob lem and their adaption to other problems is dif?cult and in many cases even impos sible. Second, they are typically designed to “build” one single solution in the most effective way, whereas most decision problems have a vast number of feasible solu tions. Hence usually the chances are high that there exist better ones. To overcome these limitations, problem independent search strategies, in particular metaheuris tics, have been proposed. This book provides an elementary step by step introduction to metaheuristics focusing on the search concepts they are based on. The ?rst part demonstrates un derlying concepts of search strategies using a simple example optimization problem.

In a context of global competition, the optimization of logistics systems is inescapable. Logistics Systems: Design and Optimization falls within this perspective and presents twelve chapters that well illustrate the variety and the complexity of logistics activities. Each chapter is written by recognized researchers who have been commissioned to survey a specific topic or emerging area of logistics. The first chapter, by Riopel, Langevin, and Campbell, develops a framework for the entire book. It classifies logistics decisions and highlights the relevant linkages to logistics decisions. The intricacy of these linkages demonstrates how thoroughly the decisions are interrelated and underscores the complexity of managing logistics activities. Each of the chapters focus on quantitative methods for the design and optimization of logistics systems.
