Overview This book introduces immunocomputing (Ie) as a new computing approach that replicates the principles of information processing by proteins and immune networks. It establishes a rigorous mathematical basis for IC, consistent with recent findings in immunology, and it presents various applications of IC to specific computationally intensive real-life problems. The hardware implementation aspects of the IC concept in an immunocomputer as a new kind of computing medium and its potential connections with modem biological microchips (biochips) and future biomolecular computers (biocomputers) are also discussed. All biological systems at the cellular and biomolecular levels are sophisticated mechanisms honed to perfection by millions of years of evolution, and their exploration provides inspiration for various novel concepts in science and engineering. Of these systems, however, only two types, the neural system and the immune system of the vertebrates, possess the extraordinary capabilities of "intellectual" information processing, which include memory, the ability to learn, to recognize, and to make decisions with respect to unknown situations. The potential of the natural neural system as a biological prototype of a computing scheme has already been utilized intensively in computer science through the mathematical and software models of artificial neural networks (ANN) and their hardware implementation in neural computers (see, e.g., Haykin, 1999; Wasserman, 1990).

Professor Richard S. Michalski passed away on September 20, 2007. Once we learned about his untimely death we immediately realized that we would no longer have with us a truly exceptional scholar and researcher who for several decades had been inf- encing the work of numerous scientists all over the world - not only in his area of exp- tise, notably machine learning, but also in the broadly understood areas of data analysis, data mining, knowledge discovery and many others. In fact, his influence was even much broader due to his creative vision, integrity, scientific excellence and excepti- ally wide intellectual horizons which extended to history, political science and arts. Professor Michalski’s death was a particularly deep loss to the whole Polish sci- tific community and the Polish Academy of Sciences in particular. After graduation, he began his research career at the Institute of Automatic Control, Polish Academy of Science in Warsaw. In 1970 he left his native country and hold various prestigious positions at top US universities. His research gained impetus and he soon established himself as a world authority in his areas of interest – notably, he was widely cons- ered a father of machine learning.

This volume contains the papers presented at the International Workshop “Information Fusion and Geographic Information Systems” (IF&GIS’09) held in St. Petersburg, Russia in May 2009. The workshop was organized by the St. Petersburg Institute for Informatics and Automation of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SPIIRAS). The workshop continues a series organised biannually, and attracts academics and industrials from a wide range of disciplines including computer science, geography, statistics, mathematics, hydrography, geomorphology, and environmental sciences. The objective of this workshop is to provide a forum for innovative research oriented towards Geographic Information Science and tech- logies and Corporate Information Systems whose close association highlight novel theoretical and practical challenges. The papers selected by the International Program Committee cover a wide range of innovative areas including ontological and semantic approaches for the representation of geographical data, geographical data monitoring, situation management and forecast, to emerging applications oriented to the maritime environment, disaster management and security threats. While traditional topics of GIS conferences are well represented and still being advanced, several new domains appear and stress the need for the development of versatile monitoring systems and decision making systems. While GIS already have a de facto standard for geographical monitoring and analysis, the papers accepted in this volume also illustrate several novel directions of application whose objective is more closely oriented to process modeling and decision making, and where the nature of the objects represented is revisited using ontological and semantic approaches.

Artificial Immune Systems written by Jon Timmis and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-11-03 with Computers categories.

In many ways, our immune systems are as complex as our brains. They learn, predict, remember and adapt, protecting us from the maelstrom of pathogens that infect us daily. Computer Science frequently takes inspiration from the seemingly endless capabilities of natural systems. It should therefore be no s- prise that, like the ?eld of Arti?cial Neural Networks inspired from brains, we now have a vigorous ?eld of research known as Arti?cial Immune Systems (AIS), inspired by our own immune systems. Although still relatively new, the previous 10 years has seen the paradigm of AIS rapidly establish itself as an important biological metaphor. Researchers all over the world fruitfully exploit “immunological ideas” in many di?erent ways to provide mechanisms for tackling a wide variety of applications. In this volume we present the proceedings of ICARIS 2003, the 2nd Int- national Conference on Arti?cial Immune Systems. This was the second int- national conference entirely dedicated to the ?eld, and followed the extremely successful ?rst conference held in Canterbury, UK in 2002. The number and - versityofpapersinthisyear’sconferenceisatributetotheever-growingnumber ofresearchersinthearea, andrepresentativeofthesolidfoundationofworkthat now exists in this area. The range of topics considered is wide. For example, at one end of the spectrum we see a selection of papers providing a necessary t- oretical grounding for the ?eld. At the other end, we have an exciting range of applications to real-world problems, covering, for example, job-shop scheduling and fault detection in refrigeration systems.
